Bresson DVD Availability

What’s the deal with the availability of his films on DVD? I know Criterion has a few and that Studio Canal took away theirs, but havent re-released them. Compared to other directors, he has few films and most of them are OOP. Anyone know what’s up with forthcoming re-releases of unavailable films like L’Argent and Diary of a Country Priest?

I want “Le Diable Probablement” on DVD!

New Yorker put out “Lancelot du Lac” awhile ago. “A Man Escaped is also available.”

Living in the UK, I don’t have a problem with this: A Man Escaped, The Devil Probably, Lancelot du Lac, Au Hasard Balthazar, Diary of a Country Priest, L’Argent, The Trial of Joan of Arc, Pickpocket, Mouchette and Les Dames Du Bois De Boulogne are all available on Region 2 DVD, reasonably priced as well.

Sometimes it pays to have a multi-region player.

All Bresson films are out on English-subtitled dvds except for Four Nights of a Dreamer and Une Femme Douce.

The status of Robert Bresson’s films on DVD can be found here (in the meantime artificial eye (UK) and intermedio (Spain) have also released some additional films).

Yeah, I was just looking at that link yesterday Apursansar. I was trying to find out about Four Nights of a Dreamer. Wrote about it on Criterion’s facebook, but I doubt New Yorker will give up the rights….or do anything with the film….

Wasn’t Diary of a Country Priest the only one among the Criterion titles that has gone out of print? That leaves Les Dames du Bois de Boulogne, Pickpocket, Au hasard Balthazar, and Mouchette. The New York titles—L’Argent and Lancelot du Lac are in limbo following New Yorker going out of business last year (apparently they are in the process of reorganizing, but no word on what will become of the video catalog.

You can get A Man Escaped on a Korean DVD here

If you have an all-region DVD player that can convert PAL, you can get Trial of Joan of Arc here

and

The Devil Probably here

Region free DVD players, some as low as 43 dollars!

That’s about the price of a regular Criterion, plus tax.

The New Yoker DVD of L’Argent doesn’t appear to be progressively converted from its source (MK2), but it does feature something the original doesn’t: a terrific commentary by Kent Jones, who also wrote a BFI monograph on the film. I think it’s well worth getting a hold of.

L’argent and Man Escaped are streaming in the criterion section on Hulu Plus.

A Man Escaped was released by Gaumont as a region-less blu-ray with english subtitles.

15 euros. A documentary about the film without subtitles is included. Bruno Dumont, François Letterier (Fontaine), and other Bresson collaborators are interviewed. DVD Beaver reviewed it. Buy the damn thing.

Four nights of a dreamer needs a DVD. As does Dreyers Two people.
