Based on the Tarkovsky, Bergman and Sokurov films high on your list, I’d recommend Bela Tarr (Werckmeister Harmonies, Damnation, Satantango, Family Nest) and Sarunas Bartas (The Corridor, Freedom).

Also: He Who Is Slapped (Sjostrom), Decalogue/Three Colors Trilogy (Kieslowski), A Woman Under The Influence (Cassavettes).

I don’t think I saw these in your list (I hope), but here are a few that I think you’d like:

The American Astronaut
Elevator to the Gallows
Knife in the Water
Bob le Flambeur
Last Life in the Universe

I’ve seen the Kieslowski films and I’ve seen a Tarr film but only Werckmeister. (Liked it, didn’t love it) Also seen the Cassavettes. Yet to see anything by Bartas, will add that to the to do list and haven’t seen He Who is Slapped. Seen Inglorious from the first list but will consider the others. Red FIrecracker Green Firecracker looks really interesting.

Thanks for the recommendations Nick. Seen the middle 3, like the Polanski and the Melville a great deal, though not enough for the list. Actually my least favorite Malle. Haven’t seen the other two and will attempt to do so.

Just based on your inclusion of Don’t Look Know, and the Lynch and Bunuel films you mentioned, I’m thinking maybe some old-school David Cronenberg, maybe Videodrome?? And with the Capra, Stevens and Lubitsch picks you made, maybe Lubitsch’s Heaven Can Wait?? Impressive list of favorites.

Bing147

I have seen Lubitsch’s Heaven Can Wait, another like but not love. Haven’t seen much old school Cronenberg, mostly just the newer stuff. I did just recently see the Dead Zone and loved it though and Videodrome is on my to watch list.

Noticed one Kim ki-duk film (Time) on your list. Have you seen his others? I’m a fan of 3-Iron and Samaritan Girl especially. I also mostly like the rest of his stuff….

Bing147

Seen Fires on the Plain and Tokyo Story. Wasn’t impressed by either. Did like Fires on the Plain but only to a point. The other Teshigahara films are good ideas though as if Ivan’s Childhood, only Tarkovsky I’ve yet to see. As for Kim, I have seen several of his other films but have yet to see either 3-Iron or Samaritan Girl so I’ll ut those on my list.
