Can I shoot a film with Canon D7?

Great thread. These cameras really are changing filmmaking! They’re not perfect for filmmaking, of course and it will be very interesting to see if Canon invests in these more as filmmaking cameras.

The truth is that it is very expensive for Canon to develop them more as filmmaking cameras and that market really is not very big for them.

Personally, I’m shooting my first feature at the end of this month and still have not decided if I’m going with my DP’s 7D or his Sony EX-1. Both will deliver an image I’m looking for; however, there are some pros and cons with both!

Overall, I agree with those who say, in the end, it’s what IN FRONT of the camera that matters most, which is why I’ve been spending so much time on production design!!!

Peace,
Christopher

Go to zacuto.com and watch the shootout movies. A comparison with 35mm, fuji & Kodak and D5, 550d, GH1. D7 is in certain cases (low light) a better choice than 35mm! Make the movie but watch out out for horizontal pans. the shutter makes your images wobly. Just try to avoid fast pans or travels. I’ve been shooting with the 550d and it is amazingly good. In fact better than studio Tv camera’s and I know, i’m a television director for many years now.

RenkaBenka is right. But have you ever made a film on vhs, u-matic, betacam, 16mm (reversal!)? Well the Canon DSLR’s beat all that easily. With restrictions. But at that price, make your shooting fit the requirements and limitations of the camera and you can make the film. It’s a digital nouvelle vague.

Is this problem also common for 5D and 7D?

A good demo at http://vimeo.com/6894404 of the effect. It is due to the rolling shutter in the camera’s (videocamera’s have no shutter and film camera’s have a vertical shutter or a rotating shutter).

You can minimize the effect by using short focal lenses (wide angle) and slowing down the pans.

Here is a nice series of comparison for bunch of cameras vs. 35mm film.

5d and 7d have preset settings, no color correction. A full time nightmare.

The Heist in Garage was shot on 7D and made in 4 days. (no special lenses) No nightmares.

Yes. Pan too fast and you’ll have issues. Lenses help.

Message Damian Calvo for tips.

-Slamdance entry “Without” was shot on 7D and looks incredible.

It’s no film and frankly I’m really missing the look of celluloid, but we filmmakers gotta do what we gotta do. That, and sound mixers are ridiculously expensive.

You are a digimaker, perhaps.

To 5d or to 7d? Is the 5D really worth the extra $750?

Just picked up the 60D myself.

The LCD makes it all worth it.
Has color temp options
the sensor is same size as a frame of super 35mm
and more fun goodies. Waiting for it to be delivered now.

Also want to add I currently still sport a HVX200 with brevis 35mm adapter, and im not replacing that rig (wont until I can get the AF100)

But am very excited to have the DSLR as a new option

Is there any way to put non-Canon lenses on a 7D, preferably from non-digital (analog) cameras? It’s just that I have some really nice 35mm lenses that I’d love to get more use out of if I can. Surely there’s some sort of adapter…

yup. i own 11 old nikon prime and zoom lenses …

Also unless you plan to do serious still photography there is little reason to get the 7D over the 60D the video quality is nigh identical and i’ve HERD the 60d is LIGHTLY better in dark situations.

JP. Schmidt

It’s all about the glass anyhow.

If you can invest into some nice Zeiss lenses… they’ll last your lifetime in quality .. the body you will replace endlessly.

Mingle

JP. Yes I can confirm that. I’ve just got myself a 60D and it is identical to the 7D in what you can do in video. Quite different design to 7D, but from the OP’s expectations, there’s really no reason to get a 7D.

In my opinion, sound is always a bigger issue (and OFTEN overlooked). With any of these DSLRs, NEVER use the in-built mike. You need to find something else to record non-sync sound on, which is another load of problems entirely.

I doubt it does any better in low light than the 7D (which isn’t very good). Is there a big difference when it comes to still photography? The 60D is nigh 800-900 dollars less expensive, there must be something different. I do a lot of still photography but at the same time I’m rather nervous about bringing a 2.200+ dollar piece of hardware out into the jungle with me… My next purchase might be a 60D if it’s as good as you say.

…and yes, you will end up doing colour correction in post with a 7D and (I think?) a 5D as well. How’s the 60D for this?

…also, any advice on external sound equipment for “pas cher”?

Georges

For sound: http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/products/h4/ and you sync in editing, use an Ipad Clapper board app.

Have you seen the Zacuto videos ? In some circumstances 550d is equal or better than 7D.

Mingle

For sync sound I’ve just come across this pre-amp. Attached to bottom of the camera, you can attach any pro mic to it through xlr inputs. Looks fantastic! No need to sync in post!

JP. Schmidt

for sound i have a Tascam DR-100 and senhessier Me-66

but on the “lower end” of things you can always buy a rhode mic

and yes the photo capabilities are worlds of difference between the two … well the price difference shows anyhow :p, but the 60d still isnt bad. As I said it’s all about the glass and more importantly the photographer (and lighting).

JP. Schmidt

but the Zoom h4n is a great choice too (same price as DR-100)

and the Zoom h1is probably the best ‘cheap’ answer the quality different shows with the price difference, also no XLR inputs.

I have bought some great lenses for no money at all. Nikon 24, 30, 50 at a second hand shop for 30€ (including a dented Nikon body). And a Zeiss flexogon 20 mm at a secondhand site. So there are some really good lenses out there at very low prices. All that on a 550d and Chinese adapter rings at 11€ from Ebay. (I tested quite a few and they turned out better than the fotodiox at 80$). I tested some camera rigs, but none added anything, they were unstable, not ergonomic or useless. I bought one, tested it and resold what I couldn’t use, then bought another to check that one out etc… finally settled for a simple quality shoot35 follow focus and bars. Quality at a reasonable price.

All this has enabled me to do high end commercial productions at low end production costs. You can too.
