Something like that yea. Basically if your in the US, its region 1 meaning all discs released there are coded for 1 and their players only play 1. It was basically to prevent people from buying import dvds of films that had not gotten an official release outside yet. For example, if it wasn’t for region coding, people would have had no reason to pay for the ticket to see a movie like Hero in theaters here, since the HK DVD was long out before a theatrical release here.
Of course, there are region-“free” players available which allows you to play “any” dvd. This is also true of most popular video player programs as well such as VLC.

It’s essentially a legal formality. A film needs a different distributor for every continent, basically, and the region coding prevents consumers from violating the distributor’s rights to release that film in that specified region.

I’ve seen a lot of stuff about different region dvd’s.
Is it just that they are made in another country, and not compatible with other hardware? Or something like that?
