Thirst sounds awesome
Thirst, White Ribbon, Antichrist, Drag Me to Hell, and I’ll see Inglourious Basterds, if only to see if Tarentino can make one of them Dirty Dozenesque war movies without stealing parts of other movies wholesale. Sorry about the lack of Tarr and Malick, but that was kind of expected.
Antichrist. Curious if Von Trier is a latter day Pasolini.
Wow, new films from Gaspar Noe, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Tsai Ming-liang and Pen-ek Ratanaruang – and I am not there to see them :´(
I’ve been looking forward to something knew from Park Chan-Wook for ages, love all his films minus JSA. From the two trailers of Thirst i’ve seen it looks wonderful. If anyone is interesting it’s loosely based on Therese Raquin by Emile Zola.
Antichrist looks really interesting aswell from Von trier, only film i’ve seen previously of his was Dancer in the Dark which disturbed me for quite along time but which I thought was a great film.
Can anyone point to interesting things in Un Certrain Regard? Other than the Bong and the Thai film I’m a bit lost…
New Haneke, new von Trier, new Noe, new Chan-Wook, new Resnais, new Gilliam, new Bellochio, new Almodovar, so many beautiful by amazing auteurs, films that we in the states won’t get to see for so long!! Ah, how sad, I truly cannot wait to see any of the films by the directors I named above.
this is definitely going to be a great year for cannes.
I probably wouldn’t see anything I’d really wanna see, like White Ribbon and Antichrist, because I feel like those are guaranteed to get some sort of US distribution… I’d probably go and see things I’ve never heard of. There’d probably be a gem or two in there.
Oh, and how come no new Dumont film? I’m not his biggest fan, but still. Isn’t he still head of something in Cannes?
This will be my first year at Cannes, I’m so goddam excited. Gonna try and get tix for Almodovar, Campion for sure, maybe Coixet, Ang Lee, Noe…
How the hell did Tarantino get into competition? I thought it was supposed to be out (and wrote this an in article that’s just been published, oops)
Definitely going to try and check out the first Panique au village feature! Have been following their fantastic shorts for years.
I will take a punt on some of Un certain regard although I can’t pretend I’m familiar with many of the films…
Will be lucky to get tickets mostly, will have to get the charm going.
While I’m sure many of the films premiering at Cannes this year will be top contenders for my eventual Best of 2009 list, I’m most interested/intrigued by Gasper Noe’s Enter the Void.
He’s described it as a feature-length DMT hallucination, which should both horrifying and hypnotize the audience, and make them weep. If any filmmaker working today can make a film that lives up to that synopsis, it’s Noe.
Wow, all the great European auteurs are in this year. Also excited about the new films by such promising talents like Andrea “Red Road” Arnold and Jacques Audiard, who made the awesome “The Beat that my Heart Skipped”.
Looks good but:
The Limits of Control
Where the Wild things are
The Fantastic Mr. Fox
Tetro
Are all ones I’m interested in seeing but weren’t on the list or at least I didn’t see them. Still though I’m excited.
No Dumont? Tarr? Not ready? Didn’t qualify (not likely)? Oh, well, perhaps Venice. Interesting that Jarmusch is absent, Cannes has always been a stop for him. In terms of high-impact films at Cannes, I’m with Von Trier, Haneke, Noe. I also very much want to see where Jacques Audiard has gone next. Then there’s the always formidible Alain Resnais, and Campion and Almodovar.
Very excited about this years line-up. If I was rich, I’d fly over there to attend. Especially excited by the new Almodovar, Gilliam, and Campion movies.

The line-up can be found here. What are you excited about?
