Cam Archer should go to the Fortnight
Cool beans! So I assume Gallo’s new film too?
Venice, maybe? As for Malick, who friggin knows?
I think Claire Denis will like the new Hong Sang-soo…
Because if she doesn’t agree, I don’t mind taking her place for the screening.
Its hard not to be disappointed about Tree of Life.
But putting that aside I think its a great line up.
Diego Luna has a film at Cannes?
Mmmmh the plot thickens.
Any word on that Iñarritu film. Is it sequential?
Not sure about that but he’s back to working in Spanish.
I don’t know what to expect, since he is now far away from Guillermo Arriaga, his longtime companion as a writer, but anyways, that relationship finished with BABEL, a terrible film, so it would be interesting to see if he follows the same three-stories-mixed-in-the-same format. I hope he doesn’t, because it has made his films predictable and also has reduced his quality as a filmmaker.
Other thing to point out is that it took him a lot of time to finish it, so maybe he actually did something pretty good out of a film featuring Javier Bardem, who is a guarantee of great acting.
Its going to be interesting to see him working with another writer’s material. I’ve never been sure if the genius of his trilogy was in Arriaga’s writting or in Iñarritu’s interpretation of the material but we will see.
If The Burning Plain is any indication, Iñarritu’s new film ought to be far better than his previous two.
I heard about The Burning Plain… but the only Burning Plain Im going to watch will be a film based on Juan Rulfo’s stories.
Gael garcia will head a jury for the Camera D’or? Wow shocking…such a mediocre actor and director…and diego having a special screening of Abel…bizarre.
Wait. Is The Housemaid what I think it is?
another remake i suppose….
yeah, de Oliveira will probably win a Palm, they should have given it to him earlier though.
the official committee is a mess anyway, i won’t be surprised if either that idiot Iñárritu wins it…
WAIT, how can Oliveira win? I thought his film is screening out of competition.
aaa, damn, sorry, my bad, just browsed the non-competition, thanks Ari :)
edit: but maybe they’ll just give him an honorary Palm, they did it last year with Resnais, no?
Fandorin-san, yes. It’s a remake starring Jeon Do-yeon. Believe in Im Sang-soo. He can do it.
Why aren’t Manoel de Oliveira and Lodge Kerrigan on the Official Selection?
I had predicted Godard’s ‘Socialism’ at the Un Certain Regard section, and also predicted Sangsoo’s film too.
It seems like Hong Sangsoo will never join the Official Selection. Which frustrates me.
Why are Almaric’s and Bouchareb’s films on the official selection? They both suck at directing.
‘Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives’ is the Golden Palm of this year :O
^ Can’t wait for that film.
Oh, the controversy…
Claire Denis as a jury in A Certain Regard… spot on.
Gael Garcia is not a bad actor and Iñarritu is not an idiot. Get you head out of you asses.
Uncle Boomee is comming out this year at Cannes or is that wishful thinking?
excluding Hong from the Competition program for an idiot like Iñarritu…..yeah, smart artistic move! more like a commercial break.(hell, even Araki would have been perfect, Amalric? Luchetti??)
so many films around this world, they just had to choose another actor’s film as a “special screening”, Diego Luna’s this time….
GREAT, let’s just pick fuckin’ Ben Affleck’s third film for the competition program next year, brilliant!
Iñarritu brings star power (Javier Bardem). His inclusion in competition seems obvious. Amalric is one of my favorite actors. I don’t know if he can direct but I’m curious. Apparently, the Kitano film is a return to the gangster genre so I’m looking forward to that. I can’t imagine the Liman film being very interesting but, again, star power. The Tavernier film sounds like prestige crap but he’s an interesting director. The Bouchareb film on post-independence Algeria sounds interesting. Mahamat Saleh Haroun is from Chad (Would I be wrong in guessing it’s the first time that country has had a film in competition?). The Kiarostami film sounds really interesting too (I would say it sounds like a return to form but I know a lot of people here like his last films – I don’t). So I dunno. It might not be a stellar lineup but it’s pretty solid.
“Amalric is one of my favorite actors”
arguably one of the best actors around but i’m always dubious on the directorial skills of an actor / actress.
You’re absolutely right to be dubious. It seems like he’s directed or co-directed numerous other things (none of which I’ve seen). At the very least, I guess, he’s not a dilettante.
It’s necessary to separate Iñarritu and Arriaga. The former is a very good director (at least technically) who has depended on relatively trite material from the latter, and it’s made his works look worse than they are. Whether I’m giving either too much credit or not, I imagine we will find out when Biutiful actually premieres.
I wonder if the Assayas will end up in Quinzaine
Official Selection still has 6 films to be added, so The Tree of Life could still premier there…
I have a few thoughts on this…
- Since there are at least 6 films still to be added (for the competition itself or not?), I can only hope Malick or Tarr are added. If both director’s films are included I would be ecstatic.
- Nikita Mikhalkov will be a strong contender on the critical acclaim of the first Burnt By The Sun film
- It would be great to see Takashi Kitano win if his film is good.
- I am interested in Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s film greatly, along with Mathieu Amalric’s.
- While I am not a Godard fan at all, I am surprised his film wasn’t in competition for the Palme d’Or; while its apparently it won’t be his last film, from a newspaper report I’ve read, it would have been significant if it had competed.
Any thoughts?
Jose Sarmiento Hinojosa
No Bela Tarr?. Damn!
