That sounds like it could be Capturing the Friedmans. or Phyllis & Harold was just released to theaters recently, that follows an older couple being filmed by their daughter.
Thanks for the reply, but those aren’t it. Very close though! Anyone have any other ideas?
Is it “Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son about His Father”??
Maybe it wasn’t a documentary…? Maybe it was The Others.
Tarnation?
Thanks for the replies, sitll not it though unfortunately. I know I’m not crazy ha ha! It’s definitely a documentary, must be between 2007-2009 I’m thinking. And not The Others. I think it was probably American. Thanks for the tips and I’ll keep lookin.
Maybe it’s this: October Country, co-directed by Michael Palmieri and Donal Moshe, the film chronicle a year in the life of Donal’s extended family . Could fit your description.
There is a whole sub-genre of docs that sort of fit this description. There was a film that played at Sundance this year called Family Affair that played Sundance this year:
October Country was it! Thanks so much, this film looks too good to miss. I was worried I’d never find it. Can’t wait to rent it. Has anyone seen it yet?
No, not seen it, just thought your description matched what I’d read. All the reviews showed photos of the family at Halloween – that was my clue. Let me know what you think when you finally see it.

About maybe 8 months ago or so I heard about a documentary that was just coming out on dvd that seemed really interesting to me, and now I can’t find it since I don’t remember the title. It was a documentary and it was about a family with alot of problems, skeletons in the closet, and pain. There may have been ghosts mentioned but I don’t remember if that was literal or not. I think the filmmaker may have even been one of the family members, but I could be wrong. It was described as spooky, heart wrenching, and fascinating, with a dark tone. Ring any bells? I figured this was my last resort as googling for this is kind of hard. Thanks so much in advance if you help me out, I appreciate it kindly.
