Having just finished the first (and hopefully not only) season of Eastbound and Down, I came away amazed at how much David Gordon Green, Jody Hill and Danny McBride actually made me feel sympathy for a character as wholly detestable as Kenny Powers.
It isn’t even a case of, “Oh, he’s a jerk, but he’s a lovable jerk.” There is absolutely nothing redeeming about this awful human being, and yet, you actually start to empathize with him, and care about his plight in the world.
If that’s not a sign of great filmmaking, writing, and acting… I don’t know what is.
