Christian Bale is going to have some serious physical problems in the future!

Have you guys seen the pictures of Christian Bale in his new roll for “The Fighter”, GOD DAMN IT! I’M NO DOCTOR, BUT I THINK IT IS HEALTHY TO ASSUME, THAT MAN IS GOING TO HAVE SOME SERIOUS PHYSICAL PROBLEMS AS HE GETS OLDER!. First he was all buff for American Psycho. Then he nearly starved himself to death for The Machinist. Then he jacked himself up again for Batman Begins. Then he gets all frail and sickly for Herzog’s Rescue Dawn. Then he puts on a lot of muscle again for The Dark Knight. Now he has dropped 30 pounds for his role in The Fighter, and presumably he would need to put on the muscle mass again for The Dark Knight sequel that is going to come around in 2012. This man takes yo-yo dieting to a whole other level! After the sequel to Dark Knight the Actors Guild should just probably give that man the life-time achievement award just to give him some incentive to stop!

Well that is certainly one of those trailers in which the whole film is given away.

I see him getting fatter than Brando. His metabolism must be shot.

That said, I admire the man for it. That’s some crazy dedication. I wouldn’t dream of doing it myself, and it does sort of make him self-destructive (he’s a crazy guy, after all), but it’s like the appreciation I feel for Takashi Miike and Werner Herzog films—here’s a man who’s batshit insane, and we all benefit from it!

That was the most disappointing trailer of the year though…

I"m sure he’ll be well able to afford his medical bills.

Professional fighters do it all the time, and with greater frequency. I compete in Muay Thai matches and if I need to make weight before a fight I go in for a full physical and make sure to keep hydrated. There really isn’t any long term health risks when the weight gain (or loss) is managed properly.

I am reminded of Laird Cregar, the great character actor, who went on a crash diet for “Hangover Square” as he weighed about 300lbs.
In his case amphetamines were prescribed; the end result was a heart attack that killed him at 31.

Mark, as you say, pro athletes do it, but I do wonder about the strain on a more normal physique, such as Bale’s.

I’m afraid from trailer I’ve seen this movie won’t do much justice to Micky Ward’s life and career.

I don’t know what idiot is hijacking my name, but I do NOT compete in Muay Thai matches. As I am a pacifist, that’s the joke of the century.

That’s okay, though—people are entitled to dream that they are me. They’ll never BE me, of course, but they are allowed to dream.
