I thinks that’s what I got out of it Den. I dont think you misread anything but good luck with your discussions

apursansar

That’s right, in your case it means that the earliest possible date until which you need to send us the introduction and questions will be February 24th.

Just clarifying, the introduction to the filmmaker would contain a brief biography and such? What else should it include?

apursansar

The introduction should also include the director’s most relevant films as well as some short descriptions of these. Good examples for the kind of introductions that would be ideal can be found in the great directors section of “Senses of Cinema”. Each participant can decide on the length of his/her introduction, and focus on stylistic, thematic or historical aspects of the films. We don’t expect an in-depth analysis of the director’s films in an introduction, but those who like to do this can publish a separate film discussion thread (Cinéma 21: Title of the Film) as soon as the director’s work has been introduced.

Okay. Thank you very much for Apursansar for clarifying.

Any introductions that are already complete as far as films go? I pretty much have an idea of how I’ll do mine for Haneke’s Pianist and Cache, but would love to see other peoples’ film introductions.

UPDATE: The interview app is ready. Primary director list compiled. Emails ready. Clock ticking. There will be a full update from the Cinema 21 account in 24 hours, but this is a heads-up: discussion leaders for round one… you’re on.

Team Haneke will be ready for Round 2 (first week of March, I believe?) if you want to go ahead and schedule us for then.

Thanks!

I saw some people suggest Zvyagintsev (“The Return”), I would also, if not too late, suggest Aleksey Balabanov (Brother, Cargo 200, Of Freaks and Men, etc.)who is quite influential in Russia and is well-known abroad.

apursansar

Thanks for the suggestion, Anna. I would also be glad if you are interested to coordinate the Aleksey Balabanov introduction and interview questions. One of the 21 participants is no longer a member of The Auteurs, we would therefore need one more director as a replacement. Please let us know if you’re interested to participate.

Anna Nieman

Sure. Let me see, if I can get him to do the interview. I’ll be glad to do the introduction and if you could direct me, as to where I could get some sample questions, I’ll contact him for the interview.

Amazed by the work of the people in the threads til now, it’s amazing, really insightful, I expect a bigger response to the hard work of these people and of course, to mine that will come, I don’t really know if second or third wave maybe? It depends, really.

UPDATE:

1. We would like the remaining coordinators of Group 1 to send us their interview questions until tomorrow. Those who like to contribute with additional questions for Claire Denis, Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Guy Maddin can as well send them to this account. The questionaire for Andrew Bujalski is already finished.

2. The second group of directors selected for February 24th is:

- Hong Sang-soo (Blue K)
- Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (Kai White)
- Lav Diaz (JP Carpio)
- Lisandro Alonso (Lucas Granero)
- Nick Broomfield (Den)
- Harmony Korine (Surrealist Gesture)

JP Carpio

Understood regarding my deadline.

How and where exactly do we send the introduction and interview questions?

apursansar

You can send both to the Cinéma 21 account above. In case that you got no further questions regarding the introduction you can also just post it in the forum section GARAGE as “Cinéma 21: Lav Diaz” on February 24th, but we definitely need you to send us the 21 interview questions to the account.

Dennis Brian

I will have the intro done (N Broomfield) no problem, just have to rewatch a few things and should be done by Monday
you need 21 interview questions?

apursansar

That’s right. Some participants told me that they might have difficulties to come up with 21 questions, and it would be nice if those who are familiar with any of the selected directors works could as well contribute additional questions. I will also try to help out whenever it’s possible. So far the questionaires for Claire Denis and Andrew Bujalski are ready to be sent, and we’re still awaiting the ones for Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Guy Maddin.

Apursansar:

I will be done with Broomfield on time. If anyone else backs out or u dont have enough directors I have one more name to throw in that I could glady cover in the last round of directors

Ronald F. Maxwell has only directed two films (Gettysburg and Gods and Generals) but I think these films are unique in their length and historical carefulness and accuracy

apursansar

Thanks for your help and the Korine questions. Gettysburg sounds like an intriguing film about the Civil War which I still need to see. I will contact you in case that another director needs to get replaced.

I thought we were going to have one thread per film of each director? Has this happened, or am I missing something? Is it just the intro?

Savvy

@Zach: This project is still in its beginning phase, and so far I’ve been organizing the introduction part while waiting for T to return. I think that we can start with the film discussion threads in a couple of days as soon as some more people have found the time to watch selected films by the directors. I should also point out that the directors of each group can still be discussed after the first 10 days are over and the next group introductions have already been published, since it’s an ongoing project with shifting focus. In some cases it might take us longer to get an interview response from a director, but hopefully all of these will get posted to Garage during the next 2-3 months.

Apursansar, ah, okay. Thanks for the quick response. I’m really excited about this (as, of course, you know).
