Clay Animation

I just watched Puppetboy today and I can’t help but to be absolutely fascinated by clay animation or any stop motion animation in general. Willis O’Brien (King Kong) and Ray Harryhausen have been two of my heroes since I can remember. I’m curious to see how Puppetboy will do in Hollywood (if you haven’t seen the short film that introduces Puppetboy, you can watch it for free on the Auteurs). I have always been obsessed with stop motion, clay animation, puppets, and marionettes, umm, but not dolls, I’m not obsessed with dolls, so don’t say that, but any stop motion animation really appeals to me. Has anyone on this site dabbled in this? I’m not a film maker but this type of art is something that I might want to explore in greater depth and actually get involved in.

Thanks for any responses to this thread and, umm, there’s nothing wrong with dolls in my opinion. Svankmajer and the brothers Quay made a fortune playing with dolls.

PS – I’m interested in advice for this type of film making; technical advice, books, materials, etc. Or just discuss Puppetboy or your favorite stop motion animation.

I have no problem with folks just posting their favorite stop motion animation here. I never get tired of watching it!

Puppetboy … an adorably funny and tortured soul…can’t imagine how many still shots must have been taken for the animated segment!? … that was a pleasant surprise and a freebie too!

If you like claymation, you should check Bruce Bickford and Will Vinton :)

@ – Nohea, adorable? Well, I guess he is in his owned disgruntled and tortured way. I found the short to be an odd way of promoting the artists work but I think it was effective none the less.

@ – Floserber, thanks for the clips. I am not familiar with Bickford and Vinton’s work and it’s always good to see new stop motion artists.

I love Puppetboy!

How much, Berjuan? How much do you love Puppetboy?

Aardman Animations is probably what really got me interested in this type of film. I absolutely love this clip!

@ Den – RIP, Art Clokey. Gumby was special.

I didn’t know this last one Soybean! after a little research I found it is by Richard Goleszowski, the author of Rex The Runt this guy made really good things, even if i’m not a big fan of his last work on Shaun the Sheep, it’s still excellent ont the animation but it lost this absurd humour, it better suits for children.

He also made this:

Soybean,
I thought it was clever. Here you are watching him ‘clayfully’ tangle inside his claustrophobic chamber with his endless battles with everyday life…then to find the whole thing to be a staged tv documentary…and finally to realize it was a well thought out spoof. (it probably took me longer than most) And the naturalness of his clayful appearance is waay more endearing, to me, than the shiny, slick look of the puppets on the shelf.

“Creature Comforts” is an entire television series, too. I had no idea until I spotted the first season at my local supermarket one day and picked it up for five doll hairs! Good deal! It’s a great series.

Stop-motion’s my faaave.

I have never really liked the look of stop motion. In addition to stuff like Gumby, I’ve tried watching some Svankmajer, Barta, and Quay Brothers, but just couldn’t get into it.

But I can’t deny that I do enjoy the occasional Pingu :)

I’ve always enjoyed the gnomes from Return to Oz:
