For appreciation of Firth’s range as an actor, check out his performance as the title character in Milos Forman’s “Valmont”.
I can’t agree more with you Squiffle.
^ very moving performance throughout
He should have won the Oscar for it. His performance in "The King’s Speech’ is quite good but “A Single man” has real depth to it. It’s all about loneliness and difficulty of connecting with other people in the midst of grief — even people you know well, likethe character Julianne Moore plays. (She’s based on Iris Tree who makes a memorable appearance in the Steiner party sequence in “La Dolce Vita.”)
I was surprised by it. Firth was always a good actor, but he really conveyed the despair of the character and kept the integrity of the material without resorting to the usual trappings.
A fine performance in a foul film. To be fair, Firth’s scene where he gets the Awful Phone Call about Jim’s passing is most impressive, by far the most memorable thing in the funereal fashion layout masquerading as a film. But even Firth’s performance falls into the black hole of Tom Ford’s ponderous style, as closeup after closeup of George displaying Subtle Emotions (twitch, twitch, emote, emote) get as annoying as the rest of the film’s gimmickry
Who ate your lunch and ran, Roscoe?
Tom Ford, of course.
Squiffle
Was seriously blown away by this performance. The way he bottled up everything, the subtlety of it all. The scene where he finds out his lover is dead on the phone was amazing. Reminded me of Ralph Fiennes in The Constant Gardener.
