Tetro, for the reason of Vincent Gallo and Coppola with the hopes of something refreshing coming from this film.
Now that I know about Spike Jonze’s new film I’m probably interested in that. Maybe the Tyson doc.
Public Enemies by Michael Mann
Duplicity by Tony Gilroy
There’s a third, but I can’t recall.
Watchmen. It has a huge budget and great source material, and even if it is an abject failure, some of it will be excellent eyecandy.
Lots and lots of movies from my favorite directors to watch at the cinemas:
King Shot (Alejandro Jodorowsky)
The Tree of Life (Terrence Malick)
On the Road (Walter Salles)
Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (Werner Herzog)
The Dust of Time (Theodoros Angelopoulos)
The Man from London (Béla Tarr)
The Rum Diary (Bruce Robinson)
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (Terry Gilliam)
Interrupted (Philip Kaufman)
Untitled (Todd Solondz)
Mammoth (Lukas Moodysson)
Antichrist (Lars von Trier)
Tetro (Francis Ford Coppola)
Visages (Ming-liang Tsai)
The Limits of Control (Jim Jarmusch)
Palermo Shooting (Wim Wenders)
Adoration (Atom Egoyan)
^^
That just about covers all bases. Though I’m gonna have to add Watchmen.
Grey Daisies pretty much said it all for me, with the addition of Where the Wild Things Are which looks absolutely stunning.
I’m still planning on Tree of Life and King Shot to be delayed, however, and I know that Tetro ran into some problems a while ago when all of the equipment and hard drives were stolen. Last I heard Coppola was putting out a notice begging whoever took it to simply return the hard drives, saying they could keep all the equipment since that can easily be replaced.
Looks like they’re calling Todd Solondz’ new film “Forgiveness” right now. Who knows what will happen when it finally comes out. “Love in Wartime” is another possibility.

Watchmen Watchmen Watchmen!
Regarding Coppola’s Tetro: Youth Without Youth was a staggering film—I’d put it way above the vaguely similar Benjamin Button (and I say that as a very deep admirer of Fincher); and it was so in part because of Golijov’s score & Mihai Malaimare’s work as DP, and I see that they’re both returning for this new one.
The Limits of Control is number one on my list
oh man, THE TREE OF LIFE, if it indeed ends up being released this year. otherwise, yeah, WATCHMEN.
Broken Embraces (Pedro Almodóvar)
and now, thanks to Grey Daisies:
The Limits of Control (Jim Jarmusch)
i would say KING SHOT but i don;t think it’s ever gonna happen
I’m jamming American on this one. The Mike Tyson doc, for sure. James Toback is underappreciated. I hope Coppola’s Tetro is successful. Public Enemies. The Tree Of Life. Limits Of Control. Watchmen. And you know what? Avatar. Why? Because being American I do love the grand gesture, the big gamble. Will this be a big step forward, a game-changer, or just brazen folly? I will be there- Imax screen, funny glasses in place. And you’ll all be there too. Admit it.
I’m not holding my breath for “Tree of Life”…I’m hoping it’ll be SPECTACULAR, but I can’t see how it’ll be done in time (given Malick’s penchant for taking his time to get the picture he wants).
Right now the two that spring to mind immediately are (as already mentioned) “Where the Wild Things Are” and “Broken Embraces.” I actually have a long list of films I wanna check out, but these two are the “must-sees” of the list.
And I’m with ya, KJ. I’m lax about “Avatar” right now, but come winter I’ll probably chomping at the bit for this one to come out. Say what you will about Cameron’s “Titanic,” the man can stage an FX shot. And I’ve always been more of a fan of Cameron’s sci-fi stuff, anyway, so I’m hoping this turns out to be pretty good.
My recent philosophy has become “Anything but Watchmen”, and I mean anything.
currently, watchmen. after that, I will turn my attention to others. but i love the novel and am pleasantly surprised by the way the movie is looking so far. can’t wait to sit in the IMAX and watch it!
THE FANTASTIC MR. FOX
Well, you got Tsai ming liang, lars von trier, bruce robinson, terry gilliam, wes anderson, Mr. Angelopoulous, Jodorowsky (something to relish in our filmgoing lifetime) Tarantino, and Terrence Malick all in one year. That’s kind of amazing, I think, because most of these guys don’t fuck around. So, we won’t get another Milk, or Miracle at St. Annna. At least I hope not.
Shutter Island
Mathias Palmberg
What movie/movies are you looking forward to this year and why.
