I think you must really, really envy us.
Movies I started but never finished: Nashville, Seven Samurai, 8 1/2, 2001,
I’ve never seen The Seventh Seal, or anything by Kurosawa or Ozu, Metropolis, All About Eve, Singing in the Rain, The Great Escape (and I love McQueen and Bronson!). It’s almost a relief to finally reveal this. haha.
I’ve also never seen the Lord of the Rings trilogy or the Harry Potter films but I’m not ashamed about that, that is a choice to not see them.
I have to watch Andrei Rublev, Rules of the game and may be Solaris without which my existence in this board is futile.
one advice for you folks who have not seen 8 1/2 – every movie you see more or less has an idea where it is heading to , but 81/2 turned an excellent movie despite not having a proper orientation, fellini had no idea what he was going to make – a masterpiece, go for it folks.
i’ve seen the majority of bergman’s works, but somehow never ‘the seventh seal’. although, after having heard so much about tarkovsky, i watched ‘andrei rublev’ a month or so ago and had to curse myself for not having watched it earlier. i may just end up having to spend this weekend holed up in my bedroom with all of the movies i’ve been meaning to watch.
Not sure if this has a place in this thread, but can you believe I’ve never seen ‘The Sound of Music’?
There’s just so many. I didn’t really get into film until about 3 or so years ago (latter half of my senior year in hs), so I’m caught up on everything since then, but I’m so so far behind on the classics, aka most of the criterions. Luckily, though, I have netflix, which seems to have just about all of them, so I’m slowing getting there.
Kill Bill - just ain’t gonna happen.
I do not know if ashamed is the word, but I have never seen TITANIC. When it was released in 1997 I had no desire to see it and after it became so beloved I made a point to never see it. I’ve never seen anything of Quentin Tarantino.
add stalker to my list…
I can list plenty of directors that I haven’t been able to see any films by including: Renoir, Dreyer, Resnais, Fassbinder, I’ve only seen Alphaville from Godard, Ozu, and quite a few others. I don’t know if its a list of shame so much as a list of potential discovery. Always something new to look forward to.
Metropolis y Casablanca
As my real cinephilic tendencies only kicked in about a year ago, I am yet to see so many great films, there are many directors that I’ve only seen one or two (or no) films from like Wong Kar Wai, Billy Wilder, Yasujiro Ozu and Nicholas Ray, and the list goes on.
Fitzcarraldo. It’s made even worse by the fact that I loved Aguirre.
The Sixth Sense. I just never got around to it, and I still don’t know what the twist ending is, because it was like a huge deal not to spoil it for people. And then it was kind of forgotten about anyway, like something funny that happens when you leave the room but just isn’t worth reporting since it’s over anyhow. But every now and then someone will say “I see dead people” and I’ll just laugh and nod like I know what they’re talking about.
All of Bresson’s films
All of Dreyer’s
Most of Fassbinder’s, the masterpieces and a few odd ones excepted
La Strada
Nights of Cabiria
Black Cat, White Cat
Nashville
Bunuel’s Mexican period, aside from LOS OLVIDADOS.
The Godfather. Haven’t seen it and I don’t really desire to watch them.
A lot of people are saying 8 1/2 which I have not seen yet either but it’s been at my house from netflix for over a month now. I just never get around to it!
Also a lot of people that haven’t seen 2001! My life is made up of before I saw 2001 and after I saw 2001. You have to see it!
@Jim W
8 1/2 is just as groundbreaking as 2001. Go for it when you have the time. If you like it, hit up LA DOLCE VITA.
THE GODFATHER 1 & 2: solid cinema. Great story telling. But so over exposed through jokes, impressions, and cartoons that the zenith for its greatness is a bit diminished when you finally see it. Imagine seeing the pyramids in the 16th century. You come out to the desert and holy-pants-crapping-amazing! There are these awe inspiring geometric buildings looming large! But today, seeing them is now a matter of course. You’ve seen dozen of pictures from National Geographic, on the internet, and in textbooks. Seeing it is still an great opportunity, but you know what you are in for. It is still worth it, but less of an astounding surprise.
There are so many great movies out there that no one should be embarrassed, they should just try to see those films. Except maybe Ash : ). Dude you listed a ton of my favorites!
Vellaem, that is probably the best description of watching The Godfather I’ve ever heard, kudos to you.
Pandora’s Box
M
Battleship Potemking
The Passion of Joan of Arch
I know, I know, I have neglected. And I’m so looking forward to them.
I guess I will make a list even though as I said three months ago as long as this list changes every month than there is no reason to be ashamed.
-I have only seen 1 Bresson (Au Hasard Balthazar)
-I have only seen 1 Mizoguchi (Ugetsu Monogatari)
-I have only seen 1 Ozu (Tokyo Story)
Sansho the Baliff is coming tomorrow from NetFlix. The following week Pickpocket will come. Anyone want to suggest where I go next with Ozu?
