Cria Cuervos = Por Que Te Vas.
“It is a film that treats childhood as a psychological minefield – not as a time of laughter and innocence.”
Absotively! Superb summary. Cria cuervos is such a mystifying & heartbreaking experience.
Really quite a disturbing and macabre little movie, endlessly fascinating and amazingly immersive journey into the mind of a child receiving the burdens of the generation that raised her.
Ana Torrent—beautiful in Spirit of the Beehive as well. This was another of those amazing discoveries that the AWC has provided in such abundance. Definitely deserving of further discussion.

I would like to sing the praises of Spain’s entry in the WC – Carlos Saura’s Cria Cuervos. The film centers around the character of Ana, played by the wonderful Ana Torrent, who was also the child star in Spirit of the Beehive. An imaginative child, she believes she has poisoned – with baking soda in a glass of milk – her philandering father who she blames for causing the death of her mother. We see the action through a series of non-sequential flashbacks and the perspective of Ana as an adult woman reflecting back. Everything is done with great subtlety and attention to detail. There is a healthy dose of surrealism to enliven the cinematic mix. We see the family dynamics through Ana’s skewered, painful perspective. Every expression, every scene is just right. It is a film that treats childhood as a psychological minefield – not as a time of laughter and innocence. The title translates into English as Raising Ravens – which Ana and her two sisters certainly are. This film is available in a great copy to view on our site.
