In summation: really.
Yes, really. Gawd I love Crispin. The Charlie’s Angels movies are one of my guilty pleasures because of him. And he was perfect as Bartleby.
Rubin & Ed… I have to see again. It’s been a long time.
I remember thinking that he was a really bad actor in River’s Edge… until I experienced actual speed freaks. Then I saw that he was truly a genius.
I have a couple of his art/book thingies too. I still have yet to see What Is It?
He was crazy on Letterman before being crazy on Letterman was cool.
Crispin rules – that’s all
I had the misfortune of seeing him “perform” excerpts from one of his books. A truly awful experience. One I didn’t want to repeat. Sadly, I was talked into going to see one his films: WHAT IS IT. Possibly the most politically incorrect and downright offensive film I have ever seen. I’m not sure what offended me more, the subject matter on the screen, or the gleeful audience getting off on it.
This man just craves attention in the worst way.
I haven’t seen WHAT IS IT yet but now I’m curious – why is it the most politically incorrect and downright offensive film you have ever seen? Care to elaborate? Thanks!
Glover gets a big “meh” from me. It’s the very fact that a lot of what he writes/directs/etc. is meaningless (and the fact that he fully realizes it and releases it anyway) that I just can’t regard him as a major talent. He has a knack for conveying the tone of eccentricity, but I prefer those who are naturally/instinctually eccentric instead of tailoring themselves to be so. But that aside, I think he has a kind of talent, but it’s so undisciplined that I’m not even sure of that either. Meh.

Grey Daisies:
I’m sure I will be corrected here by a Glover aficionado, but here I go anyway. WHAT IS IT? is nothing more than an attention getter. It uses many different subjects supposedly not to offend people, but rather to “get them talking”. I sat through this film, which was painful to say the least, only to hear Glover’s explanation of it. He was there in the theatre where I saw it and did a Q and A after the film. Simply put, he had no explanation. He wouldn’t defend it, couldn’t offer any sort of defense for what we had just seen. He would rather leave that to the viewer. A great big cop-out in my opinion.
He has taken ideas, discussed in a much more meaningful way by better filmmakers and simply thrown them on screen and said here you go: some shocking, disgusting racist things, now let’s talk about them. As far as I could tell, there wasn’t anything to talk about. No one there had anything to say or ask. Many people laughed throughout the film and really seemed to enjoy it. I guess some people find down’s syndrome hilarious. Some people find handicapped people enormously funny. Some people laugh at the word nigger. Shocking? Yes it is. Is there a point? I wish someone could tell me there was one. It is a modern day freak show. Oh, don’t forget the great song called “Some Niggers Never Die (They Just Smell That Way)” with music by Anton LaVey. Oooooh, how daring! Please.
Thanks for your explanation strawdawg. Hm, doesn’t sound too promising then. Since Glover does not want his films to be shown on home video I don’t get the chance of seeing them anyway in the near future :-/
In spite of how controversial or not those Glover films can be (that just depends on each one), the most important thing, IMO is to have the experience. Those films seem to divide opinions.. how come that something is different and at the same time, is identical?
I really want to see the IT trilogy..
He’s pretty good in the new “Alice in Wonderland” — which is terrible.
George McFly is an icon and Jingle Dale might be one of the creepiest cameos of all time.
I though he was quite good in River’s Edge and his narration for Brand Upon the Brain! is my favorite of the bunch. I guess I’m a fan but, as Brandon mentioned earlier in the thread, from a distance.

In a manner of speaking! LOL
