Criterion B&N November 2009 Sale now Live!

Bit of a heads up: Nights of Cabiria is listed as in the sale and in stock. Tried to order it in the last sale but it went OOS – hopefully it gets here this time!

Ordered:

Army of Shadows
Jeanne Dielman
Nights of Cabiria
The Sword of Doom
That Hamilton Woman
Vampyr
Z

There’s a lot more that I want. Now, to not-so-subtly hint to family members that Christmas shopping can’t wait…

For those who bought the “Complete Monterey Pop Festival” before….Is the complete version pretty much both Monterey Pop and Jimi Plays Monterey for $55.99 (at 50% off)

Seeing that the single Monterey Pop is on sale for 50% off ($24.99) online and that the Jim Plays Monterey has not been price adjusted (yet)…but if it was…and goes down to $14.99 for both titles that would be → $39.98 much cheaper than the Complete Monterey Pop Festival.

Or is there more to the complete than these two discs?

If anyone from Canada orders something, please write on this thread if you had to pay any taxes on arrival.

I read that you can buy a membership and cancel it for a full refund if you do it within the first month. Can anyone corroborate this?

Eric Fuerst

That is correct. For the last sale, I was able to cancel my membership via phone after a few weeks with no problems.

However, i’m not sure how it effects you down the line in getting a new membership. Presumably you can renew with no hassle, but i’d imagine there’s got to be some limit to how many times you cancel a membership.

@Marc,

When the last 50% off order shipped, there was something like $40 added to the bill. This was never indicated online. I don’t have it with me, but “tax” was probably in the name of the charge.

I don’t have lot of money so I’m having a mini-panic attack over which to purchase.

I just purchased Sawdust and Tinsel and Eclipse Series 10: Silent Ozu. I also ordered a ton more but I will give those titles once they arrive.

I started enjoying the sale earlier today (see previous post). On the way home from dinner we stopped by Big Lots. We hadn’t been there in a while and they usually have lots of cheap dvd’s. Every once in a while we pick a good movie or two. Tonight was better than usual:
An American Werewolf in London
The Petrified Forest
Ninotchka
Day for Night
$3 each. What the hell is Francois Truffaut doing in Big Lots? Anyway, when you’re on the way to B&N to splurge on Criterion discs, you might want to stop by your local Big Lots. They don’t have any Criterions but you never know what you might find.

Nathan M.

Yeah, what the hell is Francois Truffaut doing at your Big Lots!? I’ve tried three separate Big Lots! in the Chicago area, and haven’t found that film, Ninotchka or The Petrified Forest. WTF?! I have, however, found a number of other great titles, and I’m happy for it.

The B&N sale is going to be pretty calm for me. It looks like Late Spring and Au Hasard Balthazar will be all for me.

Should I get Eric Rohmer’s Six moral Tales or the John Cassavetes five film box set?

I need to make a decision by tomorrow considering I’m planning on using the %20 deal that ends tomorrow. I’m leaning toward Cassavetes unless someone convinces me otherwise.

@sean keeley I have thought of buying the Hiroshi Teshigahara box set as well. I haven’t seen Women in the Dunes for a long time, but not too long ago, I saw the other two films in that box set, Pitfall and Face of Another and they were great.

Thanks for the heads up on the Barnes and Noble sale. I’ll have to think if I will go and buy something off their website.

Benjamin: Was in a similar situation yesterday, that’s a hard one so I went for both. Every site I went to were positive. Wish I could comment but I look at it as if these sales continue, just pick one that features a film(s) that fits your liking.
-————
As of today….the only titles that I was going to do a blind buy and had a hard time deciding were L’Avventura, L’Eclisse, Breathless, Pandora’s Box, Nights of Cabiria, Juliet of the Spirits, Jules and Jim and Symbiopsychotaxiplasm but I figured I spent too much already. I figured if there is another sale, I want to go for the Fellini films.

I wanted to get the Eisenstein: The Sound Years but what if “Alexander Nevsky” was released on Blu-ray and people got the soundtrack that they wanted? So, I hesitated. I was reading forums of people debating the soundtrack and so, I was up and arms of whether or not to get this one. Also, the Orphic Trilogy. I noticed that Ebert loved “Oprheus” but didn’t. Also, contemplated on the Bergman box sets since those are quite expensive but decided to go for Carl Theodor Dreyer in the end. I figured I want to finish with Fanny and Alexander first.

Jeb: I had no idea they sold Truffaut there. Last time I went to Big Lots was when they got shipments of Warner Blu-rays and box sets (that were supposed to be dumped in a landfill and destroyed) but if you and others go there frequently, please start a thread on BL sightings, definitely interested what you and others would be able to find.

As a Barnes & Noble employee I have been impatiently waiting for this sale to roll back around. We did it a few months ago and I was hoping it was very successful so I was hoping we’d do another one. Last week when we got a shipment of Criterion in I scanned them and saw that they were going 50% off I was extremely excited. I ended up grabbing a bunch of stuff that I had been eyeing and sticking them behind the counter so they’d be there today. I also was off today so I went in this morning, picked up everything they were holding for me, and got to go home and watch movies all day.

All told, it was a very awesome day.

The only disappointing thing is that the sale ends Nov. 23 and the Kurosawa box set doesn’t come out until Dec. 8. Oh well…maybe next time.

I just ordered Nikkatsu Noir box set and I am looking forward to getting it in the mail. I think one of the people who left a coupon code on their post knocked some of the cost off of my box set. If I bought that same box set off of Amazon, I think I would have to pay $7 more for a used copy. I got it for around $37 -$38.

I’ll just keep posting the codes on each page because I know it’ll be a b*tch to find at times for those discovering this sale:

ONLINE PURCHASE:
Create a new account and you are eligible for the 20% off code: C3X7J9K or F4B9F7R to take off another $10-$13.00 off. [you don’t have to be become a member]

Second Purchase for 5% off:
And in case you want to buy online a second time, you can use the additional 5% off code: F7C3H7F

These codes can be used only once.

IN-STORE PURCHASE:
Print up a lot of these – $5 off coupons – Many people have said they went in there today and brought multiple copies of the coupons but its safer to buy 1, come back again later and repeat from what I’m reading.

Printable coupons are here → http://bit.ly/2bbZid

how long is this sale gonna last?

Until Nov. 23

Jarrod – A few questions since you work at B&N: Have you heard why the B&N online portion has not offered the Blu-ray’s for 50% off. When I called, the customer service didn’t know why either.

And last, do you know if Barnes & Noble will be receiving multiple shipments daily or is it once a week or what you got that day is all that’s coming in?

Has any who’s bought Nights of Cabiria confirmed that they have it in stock? My roommate warned me that sometimes they post them online by mistake, and that, when you buy it online, they then try to order it from Criterion. In which case B&N will then be notified that it’s out of print and they will have to refund your purchase.

Eric Fuerst

Yeah, Nights of Cabiria seems to have been a mistake. Placed my order last night and now it says “Ships December 1st”. Quite sure it’ll never get here.

Jarrod

I can check to see how many copies we have in the warehouses when I go to work tomorrow. We have at least one copy in store and I am guessing other store do also.

M I

I also ordered Nights of Cabiria along with 8 1/2 and it says that it’ll be shipping December 1st. Does this mean that I have to wait until they figured it’s out of print in order for them to finally ship me 8 1/2?

Picked up Wings of Desire today. It looks STUNNING.

A shame the sale won’t be going on when Gomorrah comes out.
