Criterion box set

Last Picture Show will be getting a release on criterion but it will be in a rather large box set and of course will be expensive. Later on do think criterion will release those films in the set individually? I would love to have the last picture show but don’t have much interest in the other films in this set.

You can totally buy The Last Picture show separately, just under a different distributor. But it should have all of the special features…

It’s not that hard to find. In fact, the only reason to buy the box set is for the ones that aren’t on DVD yet.

The set has been sold new for as low as ~$70, which, considering it contains seven films and includes supplementary features for each, is pretty unbelievable, especially relative to other Criterion box sets (and Eclipse prices).

Most likely, considering they did it with both the Complete Monterey Pop Festival and the John Cassavetes box. There are waaaay too many people like yourself, including yours truly, who just don’t have 80 bones to drop.

nah, the features are different. Last Picture Show and Five Easy Pieces do not have commentaries in thier original releases. Five Easy Pieces is bare bones from memory.

Do you think the set’s worth a blind buy (with a 70% off coupon)? Namely, how cheesy is the alienation of The Last Picture Show, The King of Marvin Gardens, & Five Easy Pieces – is it more on the Antonioni / Cassavetes side of devastating drama or the (shudder) Wes Anderson side of thinly drawn characters who mope around in indie surroundings?

Not like Anderson at all, no.
