I have it and it has the gang rape. That’s the scene before they sing “Cinema, CINEMA” drunk on the street.
Yea, it’s there
I love that Movie. Just bought it finally, too.
One of my favorite Criterion releases, it’s good to see it has fans. This is one of the first dvds I grab when someone says “What’s Criterion?”
thank you so much for responding to my question everyone, i knew there would be fans of the film out there that would help me out. it really pissed me off when i found out only recently that one of my favourite films which i thought had made it past the censors was gouged so brutally on the sly. the censors in this country (australia) have no idea when it comes to films dealing with screen violence and our relationship to it as viewers as opposed to the excessive mindless violence that feeds the mainsteam (the fact that salo is still banned here is the perfect irony). anyway, i’m sure as lovers of film u know all that so once again thank you for helping me choose my next criterion release.
This is a classic comedy I’d enjoy when I was 12 years old, unfortunately the rape scene is traumatizing. But a lot of the other stuff is just hilarious: how he kills the old lady, or how he does a postman at the beginning of each month, and of course the very practical approach Ben has on how to sink death corpses. My question: do people in America think it’s a funny?
I certainly do.
Though I’m not in America right now. Could I be speaking for the Emiratis?
But in all seriousness, most of the people in America I’ve met who’ve seen it like it, and think parts of it are really funny. Mostly if they don’t, they haven’t heard of it. Just my experience.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if the criterion release of man bites dog is complete and uncut. The region 4 version I own was cut by the censors at 65.06 and is missing 107 seconds which supposedly contains a gang rape in which the members of the film crew participate and when Ben is having his turn with the female victim he asks her husband her name. I am a big fan of the film and would like to see it in its completed form but do not want to buy the same version again.
