OMG there are too many great ones to name. I wouldn’t dare try to single one out.
Suffice to say, you don’t know cinema until you’ve seen films from Eritrea.
I think that Koko the talking gorilla can trace her ancestry to the Gabonian lowlands… does that count?
No, because Barbet Schroeder is about as European as a Swiss chocolate bar.
And a talking gorilla is soooooo Western-capitalist-propaganda.
Just announced the new Criterions.
Hunger, Revanche, Make Way for Tomorrow, and Lola Montes! And George Bernard Shaw on Film is the new Eclipse. Cool!

Zachary: I don’t know ’bout everyone else, but to me that sounds great! :D
Niiiiiice! I have yet to see a film by this Max Ophuls fellow. Should I start with “The Earrings of Madame” or should Iw ait for “Lola Montes”?
Ryan, I’ve only seen Madame de…, but I think that’s as good as any to start with.
S., I’m excited, too, particularly for Revanche, Hunger, and Lola Montes.

Ryan: I’m not sure how helpful this’ll be, but I’ve only seen two of his films and the one I’d probably recommend the most is actually La Ronde. I need to see it again, but I thought it was very enjoyable. It’s sort of like a ‘story cycle’, which is the only way I can describe it and I think the photography is very beautiful considering it’s a stage-bound film. ;)
Zachary: I’m excited for Lola Montes and Hunger too as well as Make Way For Tomorrow [I’ve heard that’s great]. Never saw any of these coming. ;)
S., yeah, I know they were announced previously, but I have yet to see them, so I’m excited. I need to see more Ophuls, anyway, because I only picked up Madame de… when his three came out. Plus, Hunger has always looked interesting.

Lola Montes and Make Way are two plain masterworks. Finally that McCarey has a DVD release. I have to pre-order it!
Very curious to see the Lola Montes’ Criterion copy.
Zachary: Where were they announced? In a newsletter or something? I was honestly surprised to see them. I need to see more of his work and re-watch the two I’ve seen as well. And I agree on Hunger. The trailer I saw was amazing.
S., someone posted some article in which they were announced as upcoming releases, but it never said when they’d be coming out. These are the new February releases.

They have it posted up on the Criterion.com website. Looks like “Lola Montes”, “HungeR” and “Revanche” are all on blu-ray as well. Score!
I mised Hunger when it was out several months ago so I’ll probably rent this. It probably won’t be a movie I’d buy but Fassbender is proving to be a remarkable actor and I know he’s gotten high marks for this film. But everything else here is pretty ho hum (surprise surprise). Revanche is not a bad movie but I was definitely expecting more from this film.
Oh, well that just goes to show how little I actually check the website [walks with head down in shame] . . . . .
My dear God, Lola on BR! Love for Criterion.
Dan, YES! I know! This should be a happy day!
But I’m still reeling about the January releases, so…

No. Pedro. Fucking. Costa. W.T.F!!!
Anyway, Make Way For Tomorrow is huge. I wish I knew they were getting it before I bought the stupid region 2 with permanent subs.
“Make Way for Tomorrow” is the prize in that group. Been neglected far too long.
Well, I’m glad to have the chance to see MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW, but it looks like another slate of rentals rather than purchases.
Of course, if they’d get their heads out of their asses and release the early Kurosawas that you can only get as part of that idiotic AK box, it’d be a different story.
When is the next announcement due?
What is everyone hoping for?
Realistic hope: Bigger Than Life
Unrealistic hope: Pasolini’s Trilogy of Life
For me,………
Realistic hope: Pretty much anything.
Unrealistic hope: Pretty much everything.
;)
I’m probably the only one, but I’m hoping they announce the fifth volume of ESSENTIAL ART HOUSE.
Andres: Oh, I agree.
I hope they add some more Wajda, because I’m having trouble finding his films that aren’t on Criterion.
I’m hoping for Badlands!
Where is future Mike Spence when you need him?
Is Badlands even a possibility!? That would be AWESOME!
Drew Gregory
I’m not a big fan of the Eritrean films I have seen. Which would you suggest?
