Xanadu?
HEAVEN’S GATE
OMFG — this almost makes up for those pallid Stillman atrocities.
@ Brad. Hahaha. Glad I’m not the only one who thought Xanadu (even though I’m sure we both knew that wasn’t the real answer :).
thats good then….it should be available then for the next B&N 50 PERCENT off sale by december bahahahahahaha!!!
I’m psyched enough about HEAVEN’S GATE to get it when it comes out.
HOLY TOLEDO OHIO! I just recently re-watched HEAVEN’S GATE and was struck at how much it grows on you…a debacle to be sure, but immensely watchable
Oh, I see. Heaven Skate.
and that fiddler appears during the roller skating scene
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IiNlthlz1d8 He sure does!
Holy shit!
id lovw to see a nice HD tranfer of Heaven’s Gate. Criterion is probably the.film’s only hope of getting another serious look by critics and cinephiles too!
the current mgm dis is lousy. any improvement would be greatly appreciated.
The current MGM DVD of HEAVEN’S GATE is unwatchable, it isn’t even anamorphic for wide TVs. Appalling. And certain scenes are missing subtitles. Jesus.
I’m very excited about this. I’ve been expecting this for quite a while, since that re-release a few years back, when it hit assorted rep houses. It was cleaned up and restored and gorgeous, believe me. Very glad that Criterion will be doing right by this film.
^^The R4 dvd is anamorphic, but the picture is muddy and crap.
I’m not huge on the film, but it has some incredible moments. looking forward to seeing it again all cleaned up.
^^I can certainly see that it isn’t everybody’s cup of tea, but I’ve always felt that there’s a lot more to it than it has ever really gotten credit for. There’s a very interesting essay on HEAVEN’S GATE by Robin Wood in his book HOLLYWOOD FROM VIETNAM TO REAGAN where he makes a lot of interesting points. I may not think quite as highly of the film as Wood does (I believe he put it in his Sight And Sound Top Ten) but I’m always impressed by the film when I’ve been able to see it.
I hope Criterion has been listening to my constant requests that they include Robin Wood’s essay in the booklet. It would play a major role in people’s reassessment and appreciation of Heaven’s Gate.
I would like to read Robin Wood’s essay. He was one the great minds in film criticism. I’ve only seen the truncated version when it was released back in 1981 (I did not care for it) but am very much looking forward to a proper DVD edition.
haha. They can sell that coked out masterpiece at the price it needs to be. Hopefully its a huge box set.
“Coked out masterpiece”? Was there any film made in the late 70’s – early ’80’s that couldn’t be labeled “coked out”? From what I’ve heard you would have been hard pressed to find a director, actor, writer or producer who was not snorting their weight in cocaine daily.
What are the guesses for this month’s announcements????
A Christmas Story 2?
Oh wait, that’s already going direct to DVD.
Rashomon, Pasolini’s Trilogy of Life, Week End, Tati upgrade? Is this too hopeful?
I’d love a Blu upgrade of HIDDEN FORTRESS, fwiw.
Top Blu upgrade wish list
- Mishima
- Samurai Rebellion
- Rififi
- Andrei Rublev
- and seconding Hidden Fortress
Hopefully they’ll finally get around to Week End. And they said that an upgrade of Le Samourai will be coming soon, so maybe that’ll be today…
Hey – did anybody notice that they changed Rosemary’s Baby to spine number 630? So there’s no gap anymore…..
RASHOMON upgrade
