i’m not familiar with the magician, but i love bergman, how does it rank amongst his other films?

I want them all, except HOUSE… You guys can keep that one. ;)

Seriously, though, what a great freaking month! :D

Best Criterion month ever. I just LITERALLY jizzed in my pants after looking at that list

Alright, well not literally but you know what I mean

I know what you mean Ryan! Oh what a happy morning! I really didn’t expect PATHS OF GLORY anytime soon from Criterion, that is absolutely wonderful, awesome news! THE THIN RED LINE and then PATHS OF GLORY two months in a row, what an awesome 1-2 punch wargasm! : ) : D

That definitely means Criterion (and other smaller boutique labels) is getting a lot more access to crucial big studio titles than they had a couple of years ago, due to lower DVD/HD sales in general for the big studios. Thats a brighter future for us we true cinephiles!

The Magician is a magnificent film. Not overly excited about Paths of Glory or Darjeeling, but House is a welcome addition. I saw it at IFC a few months back, and let me tell you, it’s like no film you’ve ever seen.

I am super excited for this month, though I agree I would have liked to see Videodrome on the list. My local art house theater is having a midnight screening of HOUSU this weekend so hopefully that is good and I will add that one to my ever growing list.

Zachary Phillip Brailsford

Corduroy, and when you say “like no film you’ve ever seen,” you might want to add that it’s actually not that good. ;)

Zach! That is blasphemy! House is like nothing you’ve ever seen before and is amazing! 10 out of 10 for me. I wish more horror films were willing to go as balls out as House did

Zachary Phillip Brailsford

Ryan…sorry? I just thought it was, you know, pretty damn pointless, and almost a waste. :O

And the WAY it was made was just, like, “What the hell?”

Maybe I’ll…give it another go? If I can stomach it… :/

Yeah +1 for House being absolutely amazing.

Zach, House is one of the most incredibly fun and unique films I have ever seen. I remember talking to Kurt Walker about how entertaining and flat out ridiculous the film was and how I wanted to show it to everyone I knew. He then piped in with how it also has an interesting critique of Japanese society. So you see, it has something for everyone!

Also, the next B&N sale is going to be huge for me. I just wanted Charade and The Thin Red Line before but now I need Seven Samurai, Hausu and Paths of Glory.

Damn double post and not being allowed to edit.

I forgot that I might also pick up the Allan King Eclipse set, Breathless, and Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence. Maybe Darjeeling Limited if it grows on me with a re-watch.

Ryan Estabrooks

haha Zach, it IS kind of pointless but that doesn’t mean it’s not good! The cheesy ways they shot it was appealing to me, it was hilarious! It was almost like the director was trying to wring a laugh out of each shot, line, etc. I think you should give it another chance. Next time, watch it with 10 friends and smoke a lot more weed before hand. If you follow those steps, you WILL like it, I guarantee it!

Very happy about PATHS OF GLORY & DARJEELING LIMITED.

I’m dissapointed in this month actually. Why release Paths Of Glory when it’s already available and for a lot cheaper? That goes for Darjeeling Limited as well (Although I’m aware of the whole IFC thing). Eh.

Are we inching toward a possible Bergman boxset a la the Kurosawa, or did they lose the rights to too many of the titles?

The rest, zzzzzzzz.

@Wilberto, the Paths of Glory DVD currently available came out more than 10 years ago. It’s about time it got a high-definition transfer and a glorious blu-ray edition! Plus, special features at last!

Same thing for The Darjeeling Limited. I loved that movie and was severely disappointed with the Fox DVD they put out. It was bare bones, no special features and that movie practically screams BLURAY with it’s vibrant color palette. It’s finally getting the release it deserves

Time to be “that guy” … Paths of Glory is listed as being 1.66:1 for the upcoming release, whereas the MGM DVD is 1.33:1. All three of the “early” Kubrick MGM discs are 1.33, so I figured he just wasn’t shooting in widescreen yet.

I know there’s already a big debate about Kubrick’s aspect ratios, but I thought the early films didn’t have this issue. So why is POG coming out in 1.66? Is that how it was theatrically shown, and MGM just never did a proper print? For that matter, are Killer’s Kiss and The Killing the same way?

“paths of glory” is one of the best films ever; a worthy criterion…does anybody remember what kirk douglas said about this movie, and its director? (its in: “the rag man s son” )

Drunken Father Figure of Old

+1 for House being pretty disappointing. Or rather, exactly what I expected. Yeah, it was wacky; yeah, it was overacted; and yeah, there was a lot of tongue-in-cheek editing. But it just didn’t have that extra something that makes a great film.

Paths of Glory has been available forever, no big deal there.

The Bergman is a good one. Makes you also hope they may get the rights to “Summer with Monica”.

House is … well House is…

Pretty mixed month 1 – 1 – 2

The Magician has lovely cover art. I’m looking forward to that, Darjeeling, and Seven Samurai. I hope Seven Samurai (and Breathless as well) have the really cool DVD packaging. Hausu and Paths of Glory I have to see first.

Surprised about the lack of Antichrist and Videodrome in time for Halloween.

Available, but, as Alejito said, in 1.33:1, not 1.66:1 as will be the Criterion.

I have the current dvd release of POG, and it has a “decent” transfer. Now it will have and even better transfer, maybe even an amazing transfer. The DVD also has nothing in terms of special features, maybe a trailer and thats it. Plus I want to own this on Blu Ray, and we know MGM wont be releasing it anytime soon, and doubt wARNER brothers would have bought the rights to it. (They have more of a hard on for post-Strangelove Kubrick)
