Criterion Coming Soon and Discussion

Yay! A double-shot of Godard for our summertime pleasure! July pleases me :-)

Doinel

Damn, July is a real budget buster. Two Godard’s … life is good.

Brandon Bedaw

Too bad it won’t be on blu-ray as well.

I love that Criterion is giving so much attention to black and white on blu… but we also need eye-poppingly bright, over-saturated colors in 1080p, which 2 or 3 Things I Know About Her is loaded with.

Drew Gregory

Does anyone know if they are still planning on releasing an Eclipse set in July?

CineSnag

They better! I’m checking the site hourly now…I need a new Eclipse fix to get excited over (and then have to wait 4 months to have it)

Oh, Human Condition? We were talking about it some weeks ago! Incredible! Criterion listens to The Auteurs!
(Probably not)

However:
>The Human Condition has a hefty price

Aye, but the first is one of the greatest masterpieces of whole cinema! The second is a 6. I’m going to watch the third tomorrow, probably!

Brandon – You some sort of industry insider? Where are you finding this stuff out?

Brandon Bedaw

No, unfortunately I’m not a Criterion insider, but I did correctly guess The Human Condition, Made in the USA and 2 or 3 Things I Know About Her for July releases in another thread (or maybe this one, I don’t recall), so I may actually have psychic powers that I’ve been unaware of all these years.

As for saying things like Vivre Sa Vie or Cul-de-sac are coming at some point, those are either Janus theatrical releases (basically a guaranteed Criterion release), or titles that have been unofficially announced by people who have worked on the disc, with the info spreading throughout the internet.

Or maybe my blind guesses are actually influencing space and time itself, in which case I’m going to guess that the next Eclipse release will be The Politics of The Dziga Vertov Group and hope that I truly am that powerful.

I do hope that Criterion does an eclipse of the revolution period godard one day.

Eli Goodspeed

Ah. Where did you find the box art for Criterion’s Slumdog Millionaire, out of curiosity.

Brandon Bedaw

That’s fake, thank Ganesh. I made it as a quick joke in reference to the whole Button situation.

I actually have an entire folder of self-made fake Criterion covers. I’ve been thinking about creating a thread for such things, but I’m not sure how many other members would be interested in contributing. But, I guess this would be the place to ask such a question…

So, hey, would anyone be interested enough in making/posting fake Criterion covers here on The Auteurs for me to create an entire thread for such frivolities?

Drew Gregory

Please Please Please start that thread. I got lost on another Criterion forum looking at all of theirs. And annoyingly unlike this site 75% of the pictures didn’t show on my computer and it was still great. Please start that thread.

Bob Stutsman

Brandon: I would like to see them – want to see what someone does with F for Fake – oops do you also do fake ones for the real thing?. In any case, I love this kind of stuff (I am easily amused). I wonder if we could keep up the pretense that these were real Criterion releases to fool the slopes? That would bring out the usual suspects – what is XXX doing on Criterion??? Oh, the moral outrage. Then, we could really have some fun.

Brandon Bedaw

Too late, I used the word Fake in the thread title itself… so no fooling, unless we’re dealing with people who are slow on the uptake.

Plus, creating a thread like that, with no mention of how the covers are fake, could cause too much confusion with Criterion directly linking to this site and these forums.

Bob Stutsman

Brandon: Gotcha – thanks. I could see that Criterion would not be amused (but I would have been, anyway). I await the clever cover art and will pretend these are Criterions coming for my own amusement.

Eli Goodspeed

That’s pretty amazing stuff Brandon. Criterion should be paying you the big bucks.

CineSnag

Dziga Vertov would be an incredible choice

Hurrah!! More Godard, The Human Condition…My wallet is going to get thinner come June and July… I wish/hope Criterion will soon release other Andrei Tarkovsky movies (esp. Nostalghia, The Mirror, The Sacrifice) which are not already in their library. I will be among the first in line to pre-order his movies the day it is announced..

Zachary Phillip Brailsford

Yes! More Tarkovsky indeed!

I am very pleased to see that they are releasing more Godard (always great for the collection). I’m still waiting on Weekend, though, since its apparently one of the great Godard “film as essay” works, which I find fascinating (don’t get me wrong, though, because Breathless and his other works that are more “plot-heavy (haha)” so to speak are also marvelous – I’ve just never really seen films like his later ones before).

Also, with The Human Condition coming out, that gives me another chance to spend a boat load of cash on something that will sit on my shelf until I one day watch it (feel bad that I still haven’t watched Berlin Alexanderplatz after getting it over a year ago). Very pleased, though!

I want 1991: The Year Punk Broke on Criterion.

Christopher Langford

Of the coming soon I most look forward to Last Year at Marienbad. Of recently released I have The Last Metro – and while I thought it was a solid film, it’s one of my least favorite Truffaut flicks.

CineSnag

I’m about tired of checking the Eclipse page every hour. I give up.

This is interesting:

Vote For The Next Blu-Ray Release on Criterion:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=amb_link_84234391_2?ie=UTF8&docId=1000368291&tag=bluraynews-20

Au Revoir Les Enfants, Down By Law, Howards End, Kwaidan, or Picnic at Hanging Rock.

I think I may go with Down By Law..

Ryan Estabrooks

^ Thanks for the link. I voted for “Kwaidan”. As much as I want Au Revoir Les Enfants to be on blu ray, I don’t want to buy it twice (since it’s in the Louis Malle box set). Plus I think maybe it would give them a chance to add more features for Kwaidan since the original release didn’t have a whole lot of goodies on it.

Zachary Phillip Brailsford

Man! Picnic at Hanging Rock on Bluray? I’ve been waiting for that one. Surely, any of the films would be awesome (I particularly like Au Revoir Les Enfants), but Hanging Rock is something that I just badly feel like I need.

I voted for Howard’s End. Criterion needs to release them all.

Don’t mean to get anyone’s hopes up, but there is a very very slight possibility that CC will release more Yang titles. If they do then I would be on cloud nine for a year, here’s hoping…

Drew Gregory

Can someone tell me why Criterion has not put up their July eclipse release? Are they waiting an extra month because they are releasing the extra awesome exactly what Drew wants Early Dreyer Eclipse Set and want to give me a bit more time to save money?
