I’m somewhat doubtful that they could get the rights to Carrie and Carlito’s Way because MGM and Universal have Blu-ray of both and probably wouldn’t welcome the competition.
Roughly in order of my own personal preferences:
The Fury
Obsession
Dressed to Kill
Raising Cain
Femme Fatale
Snake Eyes
Hi, Mom
Greetings
Redacted
Body Double
What other De Palma films deserve to be in the collection? None. He is a complete hack in my opinion. I personally can’t believe Blow Out will be added.
thanks for the heads up Rudy. This is a dream release for me and a few of my friends. I hope your predictions are right regarding those extras. I gotta come clean and admit that I like Blow Out more than Blow Up… serious!
As far as other De Palma films getting the Criterion treatment… well I agree with your comments about Carrie and Carlito Matt. Plus the editions of Body Double, Redacted, Obsession, Femme Fatale and Dressed to Kill have pretty decent features so I don’t see that happening. Snake Eyes seems like a long shot but it does need a double dip since the original release isn’t anamorphic and has no features (I want to see the deleted hurricane scenes). Fox has optioned many of it’s titles to Criterion so perhaps The Fury one day. Raising Caine seems to have a very limited fan base so I don’t see that happening. Same with Hi, Mom and Greetings.
oh and The Corduroy Suit… Blow Out is a film that is admired but a whole generation of directors. That along is reason enough to include it. Don’t be a hater… you didn’t even enjoy at least Scarface, The Untouchables or Mission Impossible?
Mission: Impossible and Snake Eyes are about ready to be rediscovered!
Peter: Scarface is one of my most hated films of all time. Utter crap.
Kurt—have you read Nicole Brenez’s piece on Mission: Impossible? I wish it was still possible to access the older Senses of Cinema pieces.
Scarface had some brief moments of greatness… but other than that, no good. And it sucks when I have to tell people I liked Scarface just because I’m a film buff, or risk sounding pretentious.
In fact, all De Palma movies had short but amazing bits in them, whether it was one fantastic shot, a line of great writing, a montage… But the rest of those movies are just so lackluster. Scarface is so shallow, there isn’t a lot of depth to Tony Montana’s character and most of his actions contradict what we have already seen. A similar, yet much more superior movie, is Mean Streets.
Kurt: I can’t wait for The Black Dahlia, coming to Criterion DVD next April!
None. Nada. Zilch.
I haven’t Matt. Link me if you manage to find it (for now I’ll just imagine it to be an analysis of the unconsciousness ala her piece on Ferrara’s Body Snatchers). Just rewatched MI the other day: it may be one of the few times where a substantial thread of meaning and subtext runs through (and with) all of De Palma’s cinematographic gestures.
Brady, are you for real? Where did you hear about this? Is it the directors cut?
Aww man, no I was kidding. I wish.
Sure wishing they still had the rights to BLOWUP like in the laserdisc days. However, this will look amazing and is definitely my favorite De Palma (just always lose all interest in it during the final ten minutes).
“have you read Nicole Brenez’s piece on Mission: Impossible?”
sounds disturbing ;-)
you really prefer The Fury to all his other movies? interesting.
No, actually not, Joks, I just meant if they were to become Criterion titles I would like to see them in that order. Carrie, The Untouchables, Mission: Impossible, and Carlito’s Way are all available here on BD, with Casualties of War and apparently now Blow Out forthcoming. I think a French all-region version of Phantom of Paradise and a Dutch all-region of Black Dahlia can also be had, so I’m less interested in another BD edition of any of those.
Hi,Mom!

I honestly believe all of these titles deserve the Criterion treatment
There’s only one of De Palma’s films that I think is worth the time of day, and that’s PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, and that’s already been admirably released on an entirely adequate DVD. The rest of his output, well, it can languish in well-deserved neglect.
NO.
Rudy
So rumor has it Blow Out is coming to Criterion?
I wonder what goodies will be on this?
Quentin Tarantino commentary?
Brian De Palma commentary?
Making of?
What other Brian De Palma movies should get the Criterion treatmenat?
