I really hope “The Criterion Edition” will release more Blue-Ray movies in time…Cause just the idea of Blue-Ray “Chungking Express” and “The Man Who Fell To Earth” makes me save money for a Blue-Ray Player…
Start saving and hold off on buying regular dvd’s cause it is going to be whirlwind when blu ray’s become affordable(which is still pretty far down the line). You can find a player on amazon for a little over $250.00 still expensive, and maybe not worth the price. But you will see the difference in the image. And i too am eager to see criterion blu ray’s but they are still two months away. Those films and the dark knight(christmas) are making the wait unbearable.
Criterion is releasing more Rossellini movies in January!
Eclipse Series 14: Rossellini’s History Films Renaissance and Enlightenment (The Age of the Medici, 1973 – Blaise Pascal, 1972 – Cartesius, 1974)
The Taking of Power by Louis XIV
They also announced they were working on the war trilogy!!!!
NIGHTS OF CABIRIA is worth checking out again. Poignant and energetic in content.
Straw Dogs in criterion is pretty interesting with its excellent supplements on Mr. Peckinpah.
I have almost all of their Kurosawa films. He’s just amazing…
the criterion collection is what brought me here, im a big fan. just picked up the bottle rocket release, its rather wonderful.
I’ve been watching from spine #1 after realizing that all of those Bergman films, “Fear and Loathing…”, and “The Man Who Fell to Earth” were part of a collection. I came here through their updated site! I can’t remember my favorites, but there are some films that I probably would be hard pressed to watch again without more introduction and understanding of film. These are the Jacques Tati M. Hulot films. I love the direction, cinematography, and the contrast (both in terms of hue and plot). However, I can’t get over the fact that it’s an abstracted Mr. Bean (sorry, I grew up in the 80s). The other movie I could not understand or want to understand was “Picnic at Hanging Rock”. I’ve seen more than the spine number that I’m on currently, but I’d like to someday catch up and watch the whole collection. I’m on #116 (“The Hidden Fortress”) right now after a year of Netflix.
If you think that these movies are boring because you’ve never seen them, then change your mind. Every film in this collection is significant in some way, and that usually is interesting enough to let you discuss it with friends who are also into film.
The transfer on Pierrot Le Fou is just so amazing. Probably the most beautiful dvd, if not the most beautiful movie I’ve ever seen.
Has anyone else noticed that the quality of the transfers has gone up dramatically? I started noticing ever since Days of Heaven, they’ve just looked immaculate.
I’m still waiting for my Chungking Express in the mail.
Joined here thanks to Criterion.
pierrot le fou is my favourite film of all time, so seeing it in the CC is a big deal for me.
How does the blu ray bottle rocket dvd look?:)
If Movies are a controlled substance, and DVD’s are heroin, then The Criterion Collection is pure grade-A 100 % opium. I inhale these discs like the peace pipe De Niro chugged in Once Upon a Time In America. Vive Le Cinema! Vive Criterion!
I love the CC. I spent TOO much money on the 40 percent off sale, haha.
The 40% off sale took care of my Christmas shopping! Thanks Criterion!!!
Favorites include: Pierrot Le Fou, Pepe Le Moko, Breathless, 400 Blows, etc.
its a crying shame that the 40% sale wasnt valid to people outside of the states. if you guys think criterions are expensive then spare a thought for us poor sods in the uk that are paying £22 or so for a disc.
The Criterion Collection is extraordinary: It has encouraged my love for Samuel Fuller ( White Dog, finally!) I would never part with my now out of print copy of Notorious, and The Leopard is an amazing experience, as is White Nights…. I long for them to add Senso to the collection.
The 40% off sale was a God send.. I was able to order 21 titles and fill in some gaps in my collection. I am at the point now where I rarely buy non Criterion dvds anymore.. i get those from NetFlixx, and if a non Criterion is REALLY good (ie, the Director’s Cut of ‘Zodiac’), i’ll buy it.
I joined via the new CC site. I never knew this place existed…
I used to try to collect ALL Criterion releases just as a hobby/fun obsession but came to my senses after awhile. Speaking of which, below is my trade list. I’m looking for several Bunuel, Bresson and Fellini titles, L’avventura, Last Tempation of Christ, Down by Law, and Spartacus just to name a few. Message me on here to swap.
Up for trade:
Hands Over the City
Miss Julie
House of Games
Mala Noche
Blast of Silence
the 3 Penny Opera
The Two of Us
Mafioso
When a Woman Ascends the Stairs
Paul Robeson boxset
- Joe
i think we will be a seeing a lot of criterion junkies in here now wow this looks awesome gonna fire up lord of the flies tonight see how it works!
I am definitely a Criterion junky and might need help. Within the last year I have accumulated close to 200 criterions and have no plans to stop anytime soon. My friends think I’m crazy, but I just can’t help myself. My favorites include any Bergman, Bunuel, or Fellini title. Not to mention Cassavetes, Ozu, Mizoguchi, Fassbinder, Dreyer, Bresson, etc. In fact, there aren’t many titles I don’t care for.
200 within a year is pretty damn impressive! What’s your name? Can we be friends? If yes, can I come over?
I’m not a “junky” I can’t afford to be, but I am a huge fan. I got hooked on Crits after I saw the Seventh Seal for the first time. It wasn’t the movie that got me, but the extras. I’m a sucker for the extras. I’ve got about 70 or so at home. I had a fellow Crit enthusiast friend and we’d trade back and forth and have hours-long conversations about the films we’d see, but sadly he moved away. Now we yack back and forth over instant messaging.
To be honest, Crits have changed the way I look at the world. Sometimes I find myself wondering “how would I shoot this for a movie?” That never happend until I started watching Crits.
Yeah, they’re expensive, but damn are they worth it!
Im 16 and already im a Criterion junkie! I only have 4 Criterion movies, The Blob, The Fire Within, Bicycle Thieves, and The 400 Blows. They are expensive but i believe u get what u pay for MOST of the time. Every time my parents give me money i save it till i can get a Criterion movie lol
I may be a junkie but at least I’m functional enough to keep my job and support the habit. I like to spy out bargains on Amazon, eBay and local used DVD stores. I use credit cards to accumulate bonus points at Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble so that I can get new discs every so often for a minimal cash outlay. My collection has grown to the point where I have probably two dozen titles that I haven’t watched yet. That’s partly because I like watching a film a couple times through in order to get into it. But it’s getting to the point where I almost feel like it’s a waste of my movie watching time to step too far outside the Criterion canon (like, I’ll watch art house films that they haven’t yet released but have really fallen behind on standard Hollywood fare, new releases, popular hits, etc.) Some may consider my fixation a bit pathetic but I think I’m just catching up on a century’s worth of the greatest films ever made so why bother staying current with run-of-the-mill fare? Maybe when I get caught up a bit more I will head back to the cineplex on a more regular basis.
My friend is beginning to become a Criterion junkie and I believe it’s starting to spread over to me.
I have 300 of the collection. It’s like crack…..

Well my friend please stay away because things are going to get worse and we certainly dont want you to relapse. Long live blu ray.
