Criterion Newsletter Comic Guesses

Drunken Father Figure of Old

So, I’ve guessed by now that the little illustrations in Criterion’s newsletter are hints to a release they’ll do soon. The problem is, I can almost never guess what they are? So, who has an idea about what this month’s is?

Here are some hints:

No Rivette, no Satyajit Ray. Sigh.

I found this link to a Japanese miniseries named Oshi Samurai

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0824078/

I think it would make a nice Eclipse set.

Another post suggested Nagisa Oshima (In the Realm of the Senses, Empire of Passion) for an Eclipse set of his own. That seems more likely but the samurai set would be cool.

Summer Hours?

Something about a eclipse? I can’t think of anything off hand.

I believe it’s Nagisa Oshima for the Eclipse series. He has way too many movies and it will be interesting if Criterion does release an Eclipse. Still waiting for that Warhol eclipse set though…hehe

They’ve been a little bit more predictable than before, maybe it’s just Antonioni’s L’Eclisse on Blue-ray

Patrick Bull

L’Eclisse or Sans Soleil on blu-ray? I kind of hope it’s the latter, but doubt taunts me.

The fact that the sun is saying O shi- seems to to point towards Oshima. He need more releases in the US. What will be included in the set I wonder ( If it is Oshima of course)?

It’s an Oshima Eclipse set…

They could be fooling us with the obvious reference to a solar eclipse – but if not, this might be the first time these cartoon hints have hinted towards an Eclipse release rather than a CC one. Odd…

Wait, so was that one supposed to be summer hours? Are they not doing an eclipse set or is it just not announced yet?

Or might it be The Sun’s Burial?

Oh man, what’s this month’s gonna be?? Something about a lion… or a tiger?

The Thin Red Line

" A Thin Red Lion" this month. You are on to something and I hope you are right. Of course once we figure out the clue it’s rather obvious isn’t it. Anyway this will be a great way to see The Thin Red Line in a respectable release. Of course the question on everyone’s mind will be: “Will there be extra footage for us?”.

Well apparently Malick has a ton of footage that never made it in the theatrical release. There were scenes with Mickey Rourke, and Gary Oldman, and couple others that were left on the cutting room floor. So one must wonder if these scenes will be put into this criterion release.

I was aware of this. We can only speculate at this point. I hope they reveal the details during this month’s announcements.

There’s a famed 5 hour version, apparently Mallick never had control over the editing and it was never completed in the form he wanted.

Malick had final cut on the film (I’ve posted on this extensively in another thread) -in fact according to one of his editors he offered little guidence during editing— so, while there were no doubt numerous workprints, there is no “director’s cut” of the film per se. If Malick is willing to reinsert footage cut during editing, then that’s really a complete reimagining of the film.

Interesting, there is so much speculation around Malick because he is just such a mysterious auteur

Matt Parks

Yes, and I think this is especially true for TRL because it’s such a elliptical film with so many big Hollywood names ending up “on the cutting room floor.” If we do get additional footage, I’m very interested to see it, I just don’t know that it will end up being a better film with the additional scenes in.

Well, apparently on the Criterion Twitter page, “the cat’s out of the bag,” so to speak.

The Thin Red Lion was DEFINITELY the announcement of The Thin Red Line.
