Based on the information I’ve been able to acquire, as I stated above, I’m inclined to believe that Criterion’s transfer is closer to what was originally intended. It seems plausible that Miramax would choose to frame the film so as to rid it of the noticeable boom mic, both in its theatrical print and on the subsequent DVD release. However, short of Kiéslowski returning from the beyond the grave, I’m not sure we’ll ever have a conclusive answer on the matter. At best, you could say that both are to some extent correct, though perhaps not definitive.
