I’m guessing that many people have finished going through the six films for November (/December?) so I thought I’d recommend one of my favourites to hold people over until the next festival starts. The film I recommend is Closely Watched Trains (http://www.theauteurs.com/films/212), a 1966 Czech film by Jirí Menzel. I’ve not seen any of his other films, but this is one that I saw during my undergrad (a film history course: the prof chosen it for sentimental reasons, as he saw it on his first date with the woman he ended up marrying) that has definitely stuck with me. Given its pedigree as a cruel story of youth (it’s actually very bittersweet though), I was surprised it wasn’t a selection for this festival. Definitely check it out. (It’s Criterion #131).
