Erland Josephson ripping into Börje Ahlstedt in Saraband.
Speaking of Bergman…
In Fanny and Alexander when the uncle (I think his name was Oscar) insults his German wife. You’re lips are always wet. It’s disgusting.
Painful painful stuff.
The rape scene in Noe’s Irreversible (2002) has to be among the most brutal ever…Noe dig deeps into the human psyche…
Anything with Tom Cruise in it.
@Grey Daises – < chuckle >
Just by coincidence, I am watching one right now on TCM – The Heiress with Olivia de Havilland and Monty Cliff. Her father (Ralph Richardson) has just finally told her, in his attempt to prevent her from marrying fortune hunter Cliff, that she has no redeeming qualities except her money with which to have snared Mr. Cliff. Ouch.
The “Be Black Baby” sequence from De Palma’s Hi, Mom! is very cruel and disturbing. Starts off in a very satirical manner, but as it goes on the uncomfortableness increases tenfold.
I couldn’t help but laugh at that scene in The White Ribbon.
“Anything with Tom Cruise in it.”
(insert rimshot sound here)
nice, grey daisies. nice. we also would of accepted anything by brett ratner.
Hi All,
This model certainly started with Bergman’s ‘Winter Light’ (I see Bergman all over White Ribbon, of Course. It’s a shame that new audiences are not that with him today, as he is the filmmakers’ filmmaker.) This scene reminiscent of one of the major and effective scenes of ‘Winter Light’. The formal concept of White Ribbon (Unexplained events in a small village) can be seen in Bergman’s ‘The Passion of Anna’. I am Happy Mark brought this into light.
The scene where Future Man tells Dignan his yellow jumpsuit makes him look like a banana in Bottle Rocket. You can see he’s so hurt by the remark, it’s heartbreaking.
Dogville is cruel to the point of self-parody.
salo or the 120 days of sodom- all of it
That scene in Breaking the Waves where she goes back to get her money from the police officer left my stomach in knots.

I just saw Haneke’s amazing White Ribbon, a film that definitely deserves another thread discussing its undertones and ambiguities.
For this thread I’m interested in cruel moments in movies. There’s a scene in ‘Ribbon’ which I think is the cruelest I’ve ever seen involving the Doctor and Mid-wife.
I’m interested in scenarios that aren’t violent, but more emotionally cruel.
