De acuerdo, especialmente “El chacal de Nahueltoro” me parece una obra maestra. “Largo viaje” es muy buena, me parece que tiene influencias del neorealismo y de Buñuel. “Machuca” también me gustó, pero creo que Wood tal vez copiaba demasiados elementos de “Au revoir, les enfants” de Louis Malle. De las pocas que he visto me gustaron, hace bastantes años, “La batalla de Chile” (Patricio Guzmán, 1977-79) y coincido con “El chacal de Nahueltoro” (Miguel Littin, 1969), una película indispensable. Recientemente “Valparaíso, mi amor” (Aldo Francia, 1969) también me impactó bastante y, sobre todo, el cortometraje de Joris Ivens “… A Valparaíso” (1964), que me pareció prodigioso.

La Nana/The Maid is not a masterpiece but has an extraordinary central performance. I like Ivens’ use of b+w and colour together in films like Mistral as well as A Valparaiso, which captures the historical sense of adventure and horizons as well as the current social conditions.
Chile must be a beautiful country, so much variety in such a narrow strip

Nostalgia de la Luz/ Nostalgia for the Light which is representing Chile in the current mubi world cup is a superb documentary about astronomy, the search into space from an observatory in the Atacama desert, taking place alongside women searching nearby for the remains of loved ones who disappeared under Pinochet. I found it very moving and painful. What the bastard Pinochet and his fellow mass murderers did makes me sick to the stomach. I was reminded of my 26th birthday at a Chilean restaurant in Birmingham, UK, a lovely evening and the exiles there, a woman singing and playing guitar, her husband in a group i bought a cassette of. Gentle friendly people. In those days i had more political heart and hope. The Guzman film rekindles some of the compassion worn down by events. It gradually crept up and took me unawares, emotions welling. I so hope Chile, and those still suffering whom many no longer seem to be bothered about, find their way to the light
Ken Loach’s short film for the 9/11 mix deserves honourable mention- it covers not 2001 but that terrible day 11th September 1973, a date for infamy..
