If I might add, I’d love to see some more Orson Welles films in the collection if possible: Magnificent Amberson, Chimes at Midnight, Othello, Macbeth (I’ve only seen the last two and have them on import dvds but would gladly upgrade if they got the Criterion treatment) Please, beg, borrow or blackmail to get the rights. Thanks in advance.
Jay Leighty, totally right, Orson Welles work deserves to be in Criterion and knowing they are always doing good editions, it would be splendid. I only saw Citizen Kane and Touch of Evil.
Macbeth in 3-D would be nice too.
the big chill
the vergin sucides
the godfather 1 and 2 (cronological version)
rebel without a cause
lost in translation
clerks
a better tomarrow
boys in the hood
menance 2 socity
la dolce vita
amores perros
se7en
holloween
blue velvet
mulholland drive
if you get half the list then we are so damn lucky
Stuff like Touch of Evil and Godfather 1 and 2 already have nice DVD releases, I’d rather see Criterion put out DVDs that either aren’t available or didn’t have a good release.
With that in mind I’d like to nominate Cross of Iron for Criterion I just got it the other day on DVD but several of the scenes look like the have been over exposed of scratchy but a criterion version of it would be quite stupendous.
I’m tired of Criterion rereleasing titles. Lets bring out some films that aren’t available. Letters from a Unknown Woman, Celine and Julie go Boating, Make Way for Tomorrow, and Voyage in Italy to name a few.
Are there any animated films in the criterion collection?
STALKER
Although I am not particularly fond of animated film, they should really release a few. Like the films of Rene Laloux such as The fantastic Planet, Time Masters, and Light Years. Some of the stop motion stuff from the Quay Brothers and Jan Svankmyer. Anime films such as My Neighbor Totoro, Grave of Fireflies, and Tokyo Godfathers. But really, that’s about it.
they should also release all of the other Tarkovsky’s because Kino does a shitty job of restoring films. The only one’s that looked any good, as far as the restoration goes, were Nosferatu and Battleship Potemkin.
Satyajit Ray’s The Apu Trilogy.
Last Year at Marienband which may be coming out soon.
Kobayashi’s The Human Condition
The Vergin Suicides. A Better Tomarrow. Oh, dear.
Three I’d like to see released by Criterion are Screaming Mimi (1958) and two of John Huston’s better, later films, Wise Blood (1979) and The Dead (1987). I’ve looked for but haven’t been able to find any of the them.
Criterion seems to have better luck with getting the rights to foreign films than American ones. I had to push them to get Malick and Houston into the collection, now I continue pushing them to get John Sayles, Robert Rodriguez’s El Mariachi, Quentin Tarantino, Miahcel Mann and John Waters into the collection.
An Eclipse box of films by Heinosuke Gosho.
@Lafong-Wise Blood has been showing up with some regularity on cable lately. Can’t remember which station tho.
jayson the3rdman:
I recommend writing the words “Criterion Collection” on the already existing DVD releases of the movies on your list. I mean, could a Criterion release of “Clerks” possibly outshine the Clerks X DVD?
Some Leone if you can. Once Upon a Time in America is a masterpiece that deserves the treatment. But I understand the whole issue with rights and licensing and that crap.
Definitely as someone else recommended for the collection:
Amores Perros
La Dolce Vita
as well as Breaking the Waves and Secrets and Lies for Criterion editions would be great.
Juzo Itame films please:
Tampopo [only has a crappy ‘copied from a laserdisc’ R1 release]
Minbo
The Funeral
A Taxing Woman
A Taxing Woman Returns
…none of these have ever had a decent R1 release.
plus anything that previously was released in a flat/letterbox format being updated/upgraded to an anamorphic transfer.
[like they did with Brazil, High And Low]
For Your Height Only, starring Weng-Weng. Or Vegas In Space. Frankenhooker perhaps – if they can’t get any Woody Allen, there should at least be some Louise Lasser in the collection.
Redundant post, seriously, there’s a new one of these every damn day. Just back click and bring an old one back to life.
Ah. An Internet White Knight.
“Redundant post, seriously, there’s a new one of these every damn day. Just back click and bring an old one back to life.”
If you go to the Flesh for Frankenstein page, you will see that I posted this thread under that page. Others are posting their Criterion wishes, and that’s fine with me.
I’ve read a few of your posts, so far, and can tell that you’re going to be a colossal troll.
Skedaddle.
Criterion had to discontinue “Dracula” and “Frankenstein” due to rights issues. According to J. Mulvaney, they have no plans to re-release either of them.
La Notte
La Notte
La Notte
La Notte
…and Day for Night would be cool too
GENEYA- the thing is la dolce vita already has a very good 2 disc release with lots of extras. it costs the same as a criterion dvd too
I do not think we should request Criterion to release titles which are available elsewhere or is already available on DVD.
The recent Eclipse release of Rossellini is a real gem. Films which I have not expected to watch in my lifetime is now available.
A retorspective of Satyajit Ray would be be good, but I hope that the titles will not be the same as those already released by Eureka or Artificial Eye in the UK. E-commerce has made titles available across regions and made the titles available simaltaneous across the globe. So as far as I am concerned, a title released in the UK would mean it is available by post in Malaysia where I live.
Of course the cost would differ country to country and for some, the availability of english subtitles.
I just Criterion will take into account when they are releasing any future titles.
But I am glad that Criterion will be relaseing two films of Oshima which although is already available, but the quality of the DVDs are much to be desired. Maybe an Eclipse release of an Oshima collection without any duplication of titles already released in the UK and Hong Kong.
That is what I hope will happen – that everyone does not duplicate each other unless the latter release is of a excellent quality.
Husbands.
possibly: Pull My Daisy
Renaldo and Clara
Bruce Conner
Nostalghia
—(and for eclipse: Warhol
early Dreyer
Yvonne Rainer
Shirley Clarke?)
I forgot Love Streams.
I hope to see Satyajit Ray’s Charulata 1964. It deserves a 2 disc release.
More Saura films, I mean, c’mon, Cría cuervos… and the flamenco trilogy ain’t enough, What about adding Peppermint Frappé or The Hunt to the collection?
Jo8hua
Please re-release Flesh for Frankenstein, and include the 3-D version of the film and a pair of 3-D glasses. :]
I have the out-of-print DVD, but I was thinking how cool it would be to have a new version with a pair of 3-D glasses.
