Since we are on the subject of Stalin (for the moment) I recommend:
“Stalin and his Hangmen” by Donald Rayfield.
Lays clear the complexities and the growing murderous paranoia of Stalin and his inner circle.
….now back to our regularly scheduled Nazi killings…..
Brad S:
I agree that atrocities ought to not be ranked.
Also, it is true that many “Westerners” are not hip to the devastation caused by Stalinism.
RUS:
Nope, it was a staff of one. And she was shamed and humiliated. Not because she was selling the video game in question, mind you. You see, I ridiculed the Soviet game itself, in a wry manner (I was being humorously ironic and expected her to follow suit—I know sales clerks don’t necessarily endorse the crap they are asked to sell). It was when she had the attitude “oh, it (the Soviet regime) wasn’t THAT bad” that I hit back with “try telling that to all the people who died under Stalinism”.
Nothing for her to feel smug about and no fellow staff to back her up, she just looked downright stupid.
RUS, you also act as if being ridiculed by gamer geeks would be a bad thing. Such would be tantamount to being thwacked with a wet lettuce leaf. Sort of like your own lame barbs.
Ultra Kebab:
Seriously, this thread did NOT take any intelligence from the OP to start—it’s basically a bloodthirsty rant about getting satisfaction from watching Nazis decapitated, disemboweled, dismembered and destroyed in movies.
And you’re looking for ENLIGHTENMENT from a thread entitled “Death to Nazi Scum”?
Motherfucker, please. At least I’ve tried to steer the conversation into something vaguely cerebral and have stimulated some form of discourse (e.g. Brad’s reply). That’s more than I see you doing.
vanselow:
the op totally made sense to me. your ahistorical comparison of the soviet union to the third reich did not. no need to get personal b*tch.
How in the world was I ranting? And I’m sorry if I like seeing depictions of Nazi torture on screen because unfortunately I wasn’t around to DO IT MYSELF. I think my Jewish ancestors would feel the same. I’ve grown up with over 8 years of Holocaust education and I’m not going to sit around and pretend that I don’t enjoy seeing that type of violence portrayed in movies because they are things that didn’t get to happen in real life and I LIKE IT. It’s not because I’m unaware of Stalinism and how terrible it was, it’s because I’d RATHER see Nazis being killed due to my personal connections. Can you understand that? Even a little bit? And who the hell said this thread was supposed to be cerebral? I wanted fucking RECOMMENDATIONS. So why don’t you step back and rethink the point of this entire thread, okay Vanselow?
If you don’t mind your Nazis being zombies, there’s always Dead Snow.

For that matter, people as bad as Hitler from more than one hundred years ago are treated as heroes.
So long as they won, of course.
Ancient Greece had genocides called for by popular vote.
and i believe hitler was in part inspired by our attempts to exterminate the american indians. jus sayin
When I was a kid back in the late 60s/early 70s we used to play WW2 all the time, either with plastic Tommy guns and .45s or with toy soldiers. Years later we joked that we had killed more Nazis than Eisenwhoer did. It was very therapeutic and soothing to play WW2 after a day at school dealing with fascist teachers. Our favorite TV series was Combat! (yes, the title has an exclamation sign) which I recomend strongly if you are into watching fascists bite he dust. Some of our favorite films where Sahara, Raid on Rommel, Tobruck, The Longest Day,The Dam Busters…
I love the scene in Raiders when Indy drives the staff car into a ditch and Dietrich hits the driver in the head with his gloves and says “Idiot! Idiot!”.
Also I like when in all of those Hitler… Errrr, sorry I mean Histoy Channel documentaries about the Third Reich at the end the narrator says “The Reich that was to last a thousand years had crumbled”.
Does that counts?
PS
Even today when I hear people speaking German I have a Pavlovian reaction to hide against a wall, grab a graneade, pull the pin blow the stormtroopers to kingdom come.
PS2
“and i believe hitler was in part inspired by our attempts to exterminate the american indians. jus sayin”
Actually he was! Watch the documentary The Architecture of Doom where there is a whole section about the early 20th century German obssesion with the wild west and about Hitler’s favorite writer, Karl May, who glorified the American Indian genocide in his pulp western novels.
Not really bloody, but The Blues Brothers knew how to treat Illinois Nazis (I HATE Illinois Nazis!)

One of Werner Herzog’s unheralded accomplishments has been to save the German accent from this fate by somehow turning what had always been (to me) menacing into something soothing. He rocks!
Ultra Kebab
the thread, whatever. i’m not a native speaker.
i was referring to vanselow and hangoversquare.
