back and forth and back and forth
Sans Titre’s succession of images effectively invite to look into the inevitable concreteness of the most of its footage material. However, montage and references to Cannes Film Festival and town, somehow create an integrated meaningful new whole about (presumably) cinema’s role or impact in this kind of society, or viceversa, in this short time. I agree with Risselada: comparisons with some Godard’s works and references are inevitable.
So far we’ve seen some films based on re-used archive/file footage (The Danube Exodus, Tren de sombras, Deutsch and Mekas films, etc) and we’ll watch some more of them in this and other rounds (for example, Wittgenstein Tractatus). It’s very interesting to see the approaches these creators make to any specific archive or found footage material, the distance they take, or the appropiation means they use for the construction of new meaning or as supporting document for singular new hypothesis.
And for Audition, I must say it’s a very consistent cocktail of body work, montage and great design of photography and sound. Very exciting and synesthesic piece.

Both great films and I definitely see the comparisons to Godard with the Carax, especially to the ‘prefaces’ or short films Godard sometimes makes for his films. A different Carax could’ve been a harder match but I just don’t think this matches up to Zwartjes film. ‘Audition’ was incredibly, I’ve been watching some of his films the last few months and am surprised I haven’t seen this one. Might be my favorite so far. The only comment on the mubi page says “I was elsewhere for a moment.” and I couldn’t agree more. This is like step by step for acting. Such an incredible journey to take. Zwartjes doesn’t seize to impress.

i don’t know entirely what zwartjes is trying to do, but the deliciously gibbering, bravado-spiced abject vulnerability of offering yourself, he nails that so well the film is almost sacred.
carax is, i don’t know, a little too hip for me. and the little glimmer of guillaume in this wasn’t enough for a lust-vote…now pola x……

“Sans Titre”, what a lazy title. After seeing this and the Godard short from last year I see the comparisons between him and Carax.
Audition gets it for consistency of style and a great soundtrack
