I don’t know if I’m going to have time to watch the van der Keuken. Bunuel’s is okay but nothing special. Possibly the weakest Bunuel I’ve seen. Also when you’ve got a full time job your tolerance for watching films you’re not excited about seeing suddenly drops, I’m now finding out.
I found that out halfway through round 2. I’m right there with you.
Oh boy, almost halfway through the match and only one vote! I guess a lot of people are feeling burned out. I’ll be voting before it’s over though.

One of the worst if not THE worst voting outcome in a group round since the lack of subtitles in the Italy – Taiwan – Chile – Austria group round in the World Cup almost 2 years ago. Bunuel’s presence however should have been more than enough to garner more votes in all 3 of his matches but I applaud that the manager didn’t choose the obvious French safe picks and went on with 3 brutal Mexican period beasts. Ensayo de Un Crimen in particular is my favorite of the 3.
Nevetheless, I’m way behind on my Van Der Keuken viewing but any Dutch speakers or any fans of the director in general will be pleased to know and….be jealous (hehe) that the upcoming Athens Film Festival will feature a seminal retrospective of his filmography, one of the two central directors where part of their work will be shown, the other being Yasuzo Masumura, another DC participant last year!
I’m especially anticipating Amsterdam Global Village and anyone who has any information about it, is welcome to comment even on that thread to prepare me for an….epic proportions, on-screen feast :P
As I’m watching De weg naar het zuiden can’t resist of thoughts about EUROPE as some kind of land for Ultra right-wing or Fascist opportunities, with clear lines between classes and races… Bunuel is more fun, you know, Archie is so spoiled, and so bourgeois kind, he is already a Fascist and as Fascist he is ridiculous.
I’ll catch up with Bunuel and vote in this round, but honestly if it wasn’t van der Keuken, i wouldn’t bother probably. At this point I fail to be eager or curious about a new film, but estimate time and effort it’ll take to finish with it :(

Unexpectedly I found De Weg naar het Zuiden released on DVD in Spain (as Hacia el sur) but Archibaldo de la Cruz is one of the Buñuel’s most personal and disturbing films, and very funny.

Anyway Van de Keuken’s documentary is marvellous and ernest in its motives. Watching the film it struck me that many of the injustices of people on the edge of society still exist today. Archibaldo is OK, but I can think of at least 5 or 6 films from his Mexican period that I prefer.

I wanted to comment sooner, but have been trying to play catch up on most of this for a while.
Already after a few days these films are bluring in my memory, so I guess I didn’t find them too profound. For some reason the first part of The Way South in Amsterdam sticks out a lot more than the rest. Maybe because it seemd more dynamic and dangerous with the riot police and all of that.
I was just scrolling through The Way South again to try to figure out what I wanted to rate it. Now I am remembering all of these cutaways to completely green or completely red screens. I almost thought this was a mistake in my transfer at first. I’m still not convinced it isn’t. They are so startling. Does anyone feel like they have an idea what the effect of these were supposed to be? How did they affect you?
