Finally one where I’ve seen both films!
Manhunter (Mann) 0 vs. Moonlighting (Skolimowski) 1
Manhunter (Mann) 0 vs. Moonlighting (Skolimowski) 1
I have to go with Bruce Willis’ best performance.
Both directors have done better (dare i say i prefer Silence of the Lambs to Manhunter?), hard to choose, so tossed a coin
Manhunter 1 Moonlighting 0
Manhunter 1 Moonlighting 0
“dare i say i prefer Silence of the Lambs to Manhunter?”
Really?
Well, i did when i watched them last- of course Silence of the Lambs is silly, o.t.t and not the most enlightened film, but Manhunter was less engrossing.
Michael Mann (Manhunter) 1 — Jerzy Skolimowski (Moonlighting) 0
Mann’s more fun to argue about.
you said Mann has done better and then cited Silence of the Lambs, which he didn’t direct. or was that a joke and i missed it?
Michael Mann is a better director.
Michael Mann (Manhunter) 1 — Jerzy Skolimowski (Moonlighting) 0
even young Hannibal is better, but still
“you said Mann has done better and then cited Silence of the Lambs, which he didn’t direct.”
I think he’s comparing based simply on the fact that the Lector character is in both.
Hannibal Rising, Den? Groan
Perhaps we can all agree that Ridley Scott’s Hannibal is the worst of the 4? Or is Hannibal Rising even worse?
Hannibal Rising IS much much worse…seriously Den…seriously…
5—Don’t forget Ratner’s Red Dragon.
True. Red Dragon is forgettable (so forgettable that I forgot about it) and utterly unnecessary but considering it’s Brett Ratner, it’s surprisingly not awful.
^^Ratner’s best film is ‘Money Talks’.
FACT!!!
:-)
Hannibal Rising was awful.
“Perhaps we can all agree that Ridley Scott’s Hannibal is the worst of the 4? Or is Hannibal Rising even worse?”
Hannibal is operatic, beautiful and everything a Harris transfer should be. The only thing it gets wrong is the ending, in the novel Clarice fell for Hannibal

I liked them both quite a bit even if the 80’s electronic music was kind of silly in both. In fact between Manhunter and Thief I think Mann more fully exemplifies the cheesyness of the 80’s than any other director I can think of. Despite this the story is so interesting that after I took a moment to chuckle at the 80’s stuff I was swept back into the story. It could have used more Brian Cox though.
My choice is based on the endings. Manhunter disappoints with one of the most cheesiest ending pictures I’ve seen. While Moonlighting ends so much better than I could have hoped for. Jeremy Irons is such a delight.

I can’t understand why people love Manhunter so much. I’ve watched it about 3 times and still can’t get it. The acting is painfully bad and it’s one of the worst editing of a death scene I’ve ever seen.
Moonlighting is not my favourite Skolimowski, but the atmosphere of the film and Jeremy Irons’ acting are perfect.

Style . . . Mann has always been more of a mise-en-scène guy than in the montage camp.
I actually was expecting Skolimowski to run away with this match-up.
9-6 Mann right now by my count.
