Seeing as the link only became available a few hours ago, and this is a very important match, I don’t mind extending the deadline by 3 hours until 10:00 pm BST (9:00 pm GMT) on Wednesay, August 10th
Great to have the link, but as i still have problems with online films stopping all the time, my heart sank when i saw this wasn’t a short. Lots of the films in this cup aren’t readily available elsewhere, through mail order, whatever, which is a main purpose of the event, promoting less accessible unknown treasures. I’d thought a change of scene here and a few clicks to clear and improve my computer would have done the trick, but it seems not. I was delighted though Girl and Gun starts with the great Annie Oakley clip- ideal place for it to start, really.

Love how close this is… my vote was for Mizoguchi, but I’m glad to see support for Deutsch – a girl & a gun is probably my favourite of the three.

This is a very tough vote. They’re both great films, and the two are incomparable. I love the ending of Street of Shame, how after playing a little bit of devil’s advocate throughout the film, it drops the real argument against prostitution on your head.
It’s hard to find a string in Film Ist to follow, but it’s masterful in reinterpreting images by changing the context, and the whole film is very visually interesting and beautiful. I could go either way, but I guess I’m going with Deutsch because it’s less similar to other films I’ve seen.
Now, I just need the Jansco, Królikiewicz, Mekas and Panahi for next week.
Edit: Now I’m going back and forth and really hope I don’t end up casting the deciding vote. How do you compare a film with a great story against a film with no story, but masterful editing of found footage loosely around an interesting concept?

Deutsch with a heck of a comeback, but ultimately beaten by the buzzer.

Phew, i was worried there might be 2 last minute votes like in the world cup. I knew when picking Street of Shame it was likely to be touch and go. Well done, Deutsch- i’m sure there will be a lot of new admirers.

Closed already? shiitt…. my vote was for Deutsch
But luckily I’ll have plenty of opportunity to try to figure out why that is and how to fix it, because three of them seem to have already moved on to the fourth round – I voted against Aleksei German, F.W. Murnau, and Mizoguchi all three times. Now I know how it feels to be Risselada in the last cup with Ruiz and Nikolaidis.
At least the most you’ll have to watch of any of them will be five films instead of nine!!
I’m glad a link was able to be put up for more people to see the Deutsch. He’s one of my favorite discoveries.
This was a hard decision for me as well though since both films were great but not the greatest I’ve seen from either. My favorite Deutsch still has to be the first ones we saw from him where he culled his material from “scientific” films where the images were fascinating as pieces of art even though they were intended for something more functional.

Nay, nay and thrice may! Avoid watching Mizo as if some sort of torture? Actually, Malkin may have voted for Story of the Late Chrysanthemums. I remain optimistic of converting. Murnau has classy stuff still up his sleeve too. I can’t speak for German..
Whether Kenji uses it or not, if anyone hasn’t liked Mizoguchi so far but still hasn’t seen Ugetsu then they should should still check it out. Is there anyone who doesn’t like that movie?
I’d be very disappointed if anyone actually doesn’t like Ugetsu.
