It’s here folks! After many months of watching and voting we have reached the conclusion of Directors’ Cup 2011. 64 directors started, and 62 of them have fell be the wayside leaving us with just Kenji Mizoguchi and João César Monteiro.

The Final will take place from Monday 28th November until Friday 2nd December, during which time a voting thread will open. In order to vote in the final you need to have seen ten films: the five that have represented Mizoguchi earlier in the Cup, and the five that have represented Monteiro earlier in the Cup. Your vote goes towards the director who is responsible for what you believe to be the better set of five films. You do not need to have voted in any previous matches to vote in the final.

The films are as follows:

Kenji Mizoguchi
Straits of Love and Hate
Sansho the Bailiff
Street of Shame
Taira Clan Saga
The Story of the Late Chrysanthemums

João César Monteiro
Hovering Over Water
Silvestre
Fragments of an Alms Film
Recollections of the Yellow House

I look forward to seeing Silvestre. I was wondering if people would go with adding scores out of 10, or placings of the films- you’ve done both- or just overall feeling.

I’m going to do adding scores out of ten. I haven’t even looked at it yet, and I still need to independently decide what I’m going to rate Straights of Love and Hate and Hovering Over Water.

For those not in the know, all ten films are available on youtube. If you can’t find them, ask a friend for a link.

There’s also the issue of bias anxiety.

If I’m leaning toward Mizoguchi I think, ‘Am I only doing so because he’s more famous?’ If I’m leaning toward Monteiro I think, ‘Am I only doing so because him winning would be more interesting?’ These sets of five films are so evenly matched I’m probably just going to vote based on whatever emotional reaction I’m having at the moment.

Oh shit! I added up the score out of 10 I gave to each of the five films for each director. They BOTH total 37!!!
