tough match, equal films imo.
One has great sets and gritty feel but a weak central performance.
One has cracker jack writing and Bogie but is a bit of a goofy potboiler
ummmm…..damn

Gonna have to go with:
Nicholas Ray (In A Lonely Place) —1 vs Josef von Sternberg (The Docks of New York) —0
I saw Docks in the theater, but it is probably my least favorite film of his.
The Docks of New York 1 – In a Lonely Place 0
Ray’s In a Lonely Place (1) – von Sternberg’s The Docks of New York (0)
I was melt by this line “I was born when she kissed me. I died when she left me. I lived a few weeks while she loved me.”
Nicholas Ray (In A Lonely Place) – 0 vs Josef von Sternberg (The Docks of New York) – 1
“I was melt by this line “I was born when she kissed me. I died when she left me. I lived a few weeks while she loved me.””
I found the line corny as hell.
@Brand lol i like corny line i suppose
It’s a corny line, but in the kinda uber romantic way that makes you swoon nonetheless :D
Love that line!
Nicholas Ray (In A Lonely Place) – 0 vs Josef von Sternberg (The Docks of New York) – 1
cecil i’m beginning to think you’d swoon at a pencil.
The Docks of New York 0 – In a Lonely Place 1
a corny line placed in the right context makes all the difference.
In a Lonely Place – 1 vs. Docks of New York – 0
I have a rotten heart though…remember I voted for Antichrist , Go, Go, Second Time Virgin, and Visitor Q. :P
ugh, that vimeo video of Docks of New York does no justice to gorgeous lighting of the film. This poll should be made after Criterion releases the Sternberg set.
Nicholas Ray (In A Lonely Place) 0 – Josef von Sternberg (The Docks of New York) 1
I think I’ve found a new favorite silent film!!
Interesting that both of these films are feature rash decisions to get married.
I feel like this character in In A Lonely Place had to have been written for Bogey. I think it may be my favorite roll for him so far. Despite that, I didn’t find the film to be overall such a masterpiece. The dude really is psychotic! I guess it’s interesting how much it can have you liking different characters who seem to be against or afraid of each other at the same time. But it’s frustrating too.
The Docks of New York. I feel like this film depicts a more interesting New York to me than something like Woody Allen’s Manhattan. I’d rather see these beaten down, but tough as nails type characters. They have more style than Woody’s neurotics. Even if the characters from both worlds are all pretty self centered. There just seems something both more real and more exciting. I can rarely think of dialogue in a silent film that seems as immediate and engaging as some of the most exciting modern day films.
Yeah I think I found a better print of the Docks of New York. I feel like it’s tragic that this match couldn’t have waited until the Criterion release next month.
cecil i’m beginning to think you’d swoon at a pencil.
Depends. A hot pencil uttering gorgeously corny lines?
Now stop criticising me and start thinking of ways to make me swoon my stalking lady :P
Risselada, thanks, make the organiser feel like a fool why don’t you ;)
Though leaving this match ’til later in the round would have been a good idea to be honest what with the criterion release…

Don’t feel foolish Cecil. I wouldn’t have realized it until I actually started trying to look for sources to watch the movie.
Anyways, the release isn’t until August 24 when all of round one will be over anyways, so even if it would have been the last match in the round it woud be too early to matter.
I can’t believe it’s losing so bad though!
I think it will catch up….hopefully
As we’ve seen before, it’s still way too early to call. I agree with an earlier post that its depiction of NY is incredible, and that among the film’s strongest points were the scenes of boiler rooms and docks that reflect what life was like in that period of that great city.
For those of us who love NYC its history is fascinating and troubling and to get a glimpse into that vanished world is worth many a vote.

In a Lonely Place
I like Bogart films. I especially like the Maltese falcon and Casablanca. Watch them back-to-back and you get the impression you’re watching one film starring a young Bogart and another with a much older version. That they were made just a year or two apart shows that Bogie wasn’t the wooden, one-note actor that people seem to often think he is. Having said that, does it really matter? There’s more to being cool than acting well, and Bogart has ‘screen presence’ too. I dunno what that is exactly, but you can feel it.
So then we come to In a Lonely Place, which to me seems a very satirical take on the Bogart persona. He acts (for the most part) just like any other Bogart character, but Nicholas Ray places him in a more realistic world where acting like that is just plain suspicious. “He’s not normal!!” Ha ha ha. Really cracked up at that scene. Yes, Bogart is not normal.
Ray manages to avoid being too clever for his own though, and throws in some scenes that really do take Bogart into much darker territory than before. These scenes are among the best I’ve seen from Bogart, although they do seem to rely a little too obviously on ‘acting through great shadows’ for my liking. Overall a very strong piece and a complex Bogart character.
Did I mention Bogart too much and forget everyone else? I guess that’s ‘screen presence’.
Docks of New York.
Ah, um, yeah….
This was well made I guess. The world is well constructed, the bar scenes are great. I liked it for the most part, but it hasn’t really stuck with me (and it was only a week ago). I’m curious as to why the girl tried to kill herself in the beginning (and amused at how little the guy cares about it). Does it matter? I guess she’s just one of those girls from the docks who kill themselves every so often. Maybe the whole thing is a surreal dream of hers which she has just before she dies? Docks of New York ala Davis Lynch…
An unbelievably close match for me. Both superb films. But which one made me swoon more is the question?
In a Lonely Place – 1 vs. Docks of New York – 0
In In a Lonely Place we have another of those great ‘50s Hollywood films that combines a great sense of humour with a darker underbelly, a more real, down to Earth look at things. There are plenty of films that just make you laugh, or just pull at the heartstrings, or just show you a fascinating character in great detail, or just have you gripped wondering whether some big twist is around the corner that you’d never have expected (regardless of whether there actually is a twist, the grip is what matters not so much the payoff), and In a Lonely Place one ups all those films by doing all these things at once. Also I don’t think I’ve seen Bogart give a better performance (granted I’ve only seen him in four films, but I’m definitely becoming a fan). I can see myself liking this even more when I see it again.
The Docks of New York, put simply, was a delight. The kind of film that plays me like a instrument tugging on those little ol’ heartstrings, one moment I’m sad, the next smiling from ear to ear, laughing and then furious and then desperate for things to work out for these two. It could come across as sappy mush but it’s just done so well (and, admittedly, I’m a sucker for stuff that straddles the sappy mush line) that I can’t help but kinda love it.
Also, despite how I make it sound, it isn’t all that predictable. Granted I don’t really care for whether a film is predictable or not as that all matters squat second time round, but what I mean is that it goes places you don’t expect of it, it takes big turns and goes down darker alcoves than you’d think it would which can’t help but make it all the more enjoyable. My second Sternberg and I’m thouroughly enjoying them so far, even though I miss Dietrich (in all her gorgeousness).
Now if you excuse me I’m going to go swoon in the corner.
11-4 Lonely
