Directors’ Cup Voting, Round 1, Match 7: Andrzej Wajda (The Ashes) vs František Vláčil (Marketa Lazarova)

The Africa Film Project

A big thanks to everyone who particpated in this match, more than I actually expected!! I hope that people who were interested to vote but did not beacuase of time restrictions will check both films out because they are truely superb and deserved to be seen:)

Blue wouldn’t it be just great if someone would release Ashes on dvd. I’m hoping!

Thanks to Nick for choosing a wonderful director and an amazing film. I will be looking forward to seeing Adelheid and Valley of the Bees appearing later in the competition (even if I have seen both!) and maybe some unknown film yet to be discovered here is hoping!

For anyone interested here is a rough guide to how I would have chosen the following rounds with Wajda. I hope people will check these films out at some point, because some of them are every bit an equal to the Ashes, trust me!

2nd round Landscape After Battle

3rd round Everything For Sale

4th round Innocent Sorcerers

Quarter final Young Girls of Wilko

Semi Final Ashes and Diamonds

Final a Kanal
Final bLotna
Final c Samson

There really was no loser in this match. While I personally believe The Ashes is the better film here Marketa Lazarova is still an exceptional film and am very glad I had the opportunity to discover it through the Director’s Cup match ups. Congratulations to the winning manager and your selection into the next round. Cyclo, sorry you lost this round but it was an astounding selection that I might have otherwise missed.

Cyclo – thanks! Those that I haven’t seen IMMEDIATELY go onto the “need to watch this” list. Great choice of Ashes, by the way.

Cyclo, thanks for the links. It looks like you could have made a really good run if it weren’t for that damned Marketa.

bezruc, i’m assuming that vision dvd doesn’t have english subtitles, right?

Ooooo, rip it off, Twodeadmagpies…oh, yeah, do it, baby… hehehe. :P

to Cecil from the previous page:

but Rossellini is more popular than both Stroheim and Angelopoulos ;)

(besides, all 4 mammoth films are practically unknown to most…)

Rich Uncle Skeleton

Dim, Rossellini may be more popular than those two however The Age of the Medici is seemingly far less well known than Greed and The Travelling Players and is a TV series which might turn some off of that match in favour of other matches. Plus though Stroheim isn’t that well known Greed does get a fair bit of attention and Theo has a reasonably popular director as an opponent.

ahem, blue.
as if i have time for any film that isn’t in the cup! but i may just do some ripping anyway :P
(secondrun always do nice booklets)

true to what you’re saying, Jerry picked one of the best TV Rossellini films but his TV productions overall aren’t (as of yet) as popular as his early Italian works and his Bergman collaborations.

TWODEADMAGPIES: It seems like, I can not confirm anything yet.

Well,I’m really sad that The Ashes,my best discovery in the cup so far, lost. But,at least,it lost to an equal masterpiece. The good is that now we will have the chance to see more from Vlacil, and the better,we also have Cyclo’s choises, even though Wajda lost.I really hope that Wajda has other films equal to Ashes, cause the other one I have seen(Kanal),it’s not even near in my opinion.Once again, congratulations to both managers for their great choises!

Regarding the issue some people were having with the subtitle file for Ashes, I had an issue where the subtitle would stay on the screen until the next subtitle appeared. Thus the last thing anyone said was always sitting there on the screen. It was really interesting sometimes like a characters word had a haunting effect that would linger into the subsequent silent scenes.
