twenty minutes…
it’s currently 8:53pm GMT – 7 minutes left, right?
Jose, go watch Ruiz! Hold on, Cat!
Let’s throw out NEH’s suspect vote and send this to overtime.
40 minutes left!!!!!
:b
Derek Jarman (Caravaggio) 1 vs Šarūnas Bartas (Seven Invisible Men) 0
Uff, this approach to Caravaggio’s world and art’s allegories is really surprising. I’m with Jarman definitely!
Edit: Seven Invisible Men was so schematic. I think Bartas used contemplative shots and staging in a very commodate way. Imo, a total formula with no risks at all. This particular film of his, wasn’t a good choice.
Caravaggio has a surprising use of allegories, body work, expressive anachronisms (prochronisms), color and a rigorous search in references and icons. Jarman looked for a rigurous aesthetic coherence and an interesting structure based on subtle ellipses.
Caravaggio 0 Seven Invisible Men 1
Ok, I’ll kill myself right now.
9pm, VOTING IS OVER.
18 – 17 to JARMAN
O_O
Oh, yeah.
Go watch Ruiz, Jose!
I demand an overtime! hahaha
Yes Jose, go watch one of the top 3 Ruiz works now and suck it :P
Just joking, congrats to Blue for showing us half of Bartas’ filmography where all of them were outstanding pieces of contemplation. But today, visual / acoustic spectacle prevailed over…silence ;)
Pleased with all the results so far, it would have been the same if Bartas or Petrovic had won. Now, if I manage to beat that MUBI favorite Tsai, I won’t complain about Bresson anymore ;)
Yeah, congrats to both managers. I’ll go watch Ruiz now, you fuckers.
Just joking, Jose! After loosing from Yoshida (and his kamikaze force) I find the so called comfort in watching ON TOP of the WHALE, yes.
Holy shit, Jarman won! Yes!
Nice to see Jarman turned this around, though it means that Blue and I unfortunately won’t get a rematch this year. Now I’m looking forward to my next adversary.

so happy to see Jarman advance! (this is one director I truly like and respect)
Go CAT!
xD at Marc’s picture!
Almost all the 4th round matches went in direction I’m less excited about exploring. It’s cool to see all these matches decided by one vote though.
This is fucking bull shit. I withdraw all of my directors at this point and boycott the rest of this event.
What…? They’ve all been eliminated already? o_O Umm…in that case…
Hehe. That was an incredible match. Congrats, Cat! A well-deserved victory. Jarman has a larger and more varied filmography than Bartas (at this point in his career anyhow), so it’s probably for the best that the Englishman go on in the tourney.
But I’m happy as I got to show four films by a young masterful director. And Bartas passed through Malick, Erice, and Kiarostami. Not too shabby. :)
Yes, funnily enough, Bartas wiped out all some the “favorites” of this competition but that can also be said in favor of Jarman ;)
This round is NOT going well for me at ALL!!!!
As a consolation Ris, no round has been going well for me (in voting terms) up until this one :P
And except for Vlacil/Herzog all the matches this round have been won by three votes or less.
I need to go back and see which of the directors eliminated in previous rounds still have their films uploaded. Especially for the ones who are hard to find in region 1, like Rocha. (Or the ones who have one or two on criterion but nothing else you can find, like Kiarostami).
As a consolation Ris, no round has been going well for me (in voting terms) up until this one :P
Actually that kind of is a consolation. Because at least all the directors up to this point have been able to feature four films which I think is plenty enough to get an idea of their work. Unfortunately half of the directors only got one film to show. :(
^ However, look at it the other way…it’s NOT a shame that Hitchcock got only one opportunity to show one film because HALF OF HITCHCOCK’S works are available indefinitely (half is a hyperbole, I should be saying 3/4 of his work), whatever the format….poor Terayama though had only one opportunity and that was wasted because the brackets favored (and still favor) a couple of more well-known directors. I’m not saying whether Hitchcock or Terayama is better than one another, it’s just that….no matter if one didn’t want to see more than 4 films by either of them to realize whether they prefer them or not, there’s a huge difference in showing 4 UNKNOWN Terayama films than 4 “hidden gems” by Hitchcock. I’ll take the unknown because our priority is even the rarest of discoveries.

ten minutes!
