I would imagine that anybody who’s seen both Raging Bull and Boogie Nights has made this discovery, yes.
Sydney = Tarantino/Melville
Boogie Nights = Scorsese
Magnolia = Altman
Punch-Drunk Love = Godard
There Will Be Blood = Kubrick/Malick

That last post makes me fucking sick
Tonight I just thought the same thing. Other thing that was taken directly from Raging Bull are the flashes of the photographs: At some fights in Raging and on the Awards Ceremony and at one of the weddings of the filming crew.
Even though the last scene is basically the same Robert DeNiro did, It is to observe how P.T. handled the usual modern story about a man reaching a peak and then falling (La Motta, Kane, and now Dirk Diggler) putting this character in a context where lots of other people are trying to accomplish something out of their lives. Instead of the typical story centered on just the principal character, we have the opportunity to really emphazise on the spirit of certain people at a certain era.
It’s the first Anderson film I watch, and actually loved it, I can’t wait to see Punch-drunk love

So I just watched Raging Bull for the first time (finally) and in the ending scene I realized it WAS Boogie Nights. So in my delighted surprise I threw on that final sequence in Boogie Nights with Paul’s commentary and he basically says “at this point in the film I realized I had made Raging Bull, Jake LaMotta is projecting himself as Marlon Brando, and here we have Dirk Diggler who really isn’t even Dirk Diggler becoming Brock Flanders (or whatever the hell that character was).”
Anyhow I guess I’m saying this was a fantastic realization and made each of those films more genius to me. Has anyone else made this discovery or am I speaking madness? (edit: so not to be undermined again) Was anyone else as delighted in this revelation as I or am I speaking madness?
