DO ANY WOMEN HERE FIND WOODY ALLEN SEXUALLY ATTRACTIVE?

MARK IS SUSPENDED IN GAFFA

When people discuss “suspension of disbelief” in cinema, one thing never discussed is how Woody Allen (essentially playing Woody Allen) manages to make out so well with the dames. Woody Allen looks like anything but a movie star, yet we are told that in “real life”, you need to look like a matinee idol to attract the ladies. Yet Woody has made a career out of playing the neurotic klutz who somehow still is able to woo women, and he’s done well for himself over the years in the real world, so it seems (in other words, he defies the odds both on screen and off). However, I’ve never heard a woman call Woody Allen “hot” or “desirable”. Still, if he was good enough for Mia Farrow, I must ask: would any woman here date Woody (or a Woody type) in real life? Incidentally, I create this thread as no disrespect to Mr. Allen. I’m actually hoping for a few “yeses”, because any fellow with Woody’s sense of humour and perspective of the world must have something going for him. And he’s rather awkward looking, but he’s certainly not ugly. From my experience, a sense of humour and joke-telling ability is crucial with the ladies, and women who lack a humour gland aren’t worth pursuing, anyway. So how about it, ladies: would any of you date a diminutive bespectacled neurotic Jewish fellow from New York City?

a truly excellent question, and one that I have asked every women I have ever dated since once a year I drag one of them to the newest work of his. After polling 20 girls on the matter, I can say that the 3 that found him sexy (one found him amazingly so and she was 19 to his 70) and the 9 that found him kind of cute because he is funny were usually the easiest companions to get along with. The few who found him morally repulsive did not seem to last with me.

I think the attraction in the films tho is his sense of humor, his status job and his character’s bank accounts more than anything else.

Incidentally, no one polled found Albert Brooks sexy and only a few thought Michael Jackson hot (those were the kinky ones)

I’ve never really asked my gf/bf those questions.

hmm i dont know..he made me believe he’s sexually attractive. i’ve always asked myself this everytime i see his movies. do i find him attractive? yes…but not really. maybe more adorable than attractive. i think i would definitely date him (or his type for that matter) – dorkiness has always affected me so in one way or other – and this man is one funny man. only im not sure i can stand him for so long. he’ll probably give me a headache after a while. ;p

MATT: hahaah, yeah. i couldn’t help but feel that his character’s involvement with such a pretty young girl wasn’t Allen’s deliberate middle finger to his critics, particularly his American ones ;-)

as for women finding Allen attractive, i think i have met maybe 2 in my entire life. most say he is ugly.

Matt Parks

Yeah, you’re probably, right about that, Joks.

@ Mark

Can I propose an alternative hypothesis?:

It’s the neuroses that woman are attracted to.

Personality is a HUGE part of physical attraction to me. I often fall for the super intelligent, sweet, funny dude that may not be stereotypically sexy to a lot of females.. Would I go for a Woody lookalike?… I don’t know, but it would be possible.

Understanding Woody Allen’s attractiveness now is much more difficult.

But watch Sleeper.

Diane Keaton and Woody Allen sitting on the steps. Woody Allen is doing his talking about himself thing. He sez, “Yeah, well, I had a weird childhood. My father was a conservative and my mother was a liberal, and, uh, vice versa.”

I wanted to kiss him. I think you can see Diane Keaton actually holding back an orgasm on screen.

Have you read much of Allen’s writing, Polaris? Some of the short stories he published during the ’70s are hilarious.

PolarisDiB

Well it wasn’t just the humor of the scene, but his composure and the look on his face. Kissable, Woody Allen was.

But I remember reading a rewrite of the Old Testament that he did once, and rolling.

Yeah, he was really charming . . . even as a prose writer.

He is nerdy/quirky-looking and talented, therefore he is attractive.

Also there’s the other factor of being a successful, well-employed authority figure.

I don’t know, if you can believe that Tom Cruise is in the FBI, you can believe that Woody Allen is attractive.

Reading his writings actually opened my eyes to much of the dark, absurdist humor that occupies Allen’s films. Really, the guy should have won a pulitzer but who am I kidding, they’ll never give it to someone who doesn’t write “serious” fiction.

Seems like most of the commenters here are male…but I’ll answer anyway. Most girls I know (who even know of Woody Allen) think he’s cute and funny, but only cute because he is funny and nothing more.

This kind of thread really typifies the continual mystification (and naivety) of attraction between the sexes (or at least one side of it anyway). I thought by now it was basic knowledge (one tends to receive an education in this AFTER high school) that words such as “cute” and “attractive” mean two totally different things depending on who or what (gender) is pronouncing them.

Of course Woody Allen isn’t physically attractive (even a blind person could’ve told ya that), but whoever said that was what makes him attractive in general? Sure, there will be people (men and women) who find his rants and, oftentimes repetitive, philosophizing tiresome. And others will brush him off as something no materialistic person would ever need, but one has to look deeper than that. Don’t get me wrong, he’s not a genius (in my mind at least), but he is intelligent and well-read, not to mention knowledgeable about cinema in general, so is there a reason to even know what he looks like? Isn’t all that enough?

Everything to Woody is a source for humour, no matter how dark it is. He’s the kind of guy who, if told by someone that they never knew when he was being serious, would respond “I’m always serious!…with the possible exception of that last remark”.

In many of his early movies his on-screen buddy was Tony Roberts. The two guys were supposed to be a pair in their chick cruising days, equals in all things. Roberts had curly (blondish?) hair, was good looking, very fit, a good smile and was 6’1" tall. Allen is 5’5" tall and need I say more?

Allen was interviewed by a member of the local press while visiting the Toronto International Film Festival. The reporter, a woman, asked if Woody would mind being photographed sitting in a chair with a full length mirror behind him. So that was the picture I saw the next day. Full page, the dominant theme being Woody’s bald spot on the back/top of his head.

A quote from Tony Roberts (IMDB): Woody …..strive(s) for …. ….excellence in himself … … that keeps him from anything that might smell of smugness.

call me cynical but are we forgetting…..LOADED……most women find that attractve lol…shoot me.

I’m not a woman and I’m not a gay man, so I can’t really answer this. He doesn’t seem to fit the classically handsome mold now, does he though? But there must be some handsome genes beneath that face somewhere, because his son with Mia Farrow is a good-looking guy even in this straight guy’s opinion…

deckard croix

@Blue: Well, it’s obvious that the kid has more of a Farrow-look than an Allen one.

I guess another good question, re: Woody’s wallet, is,

For those who do find Woody Allen attractive, would you do him for money?

and,

For those who don’t find Woody Allen attractive… would you do him for money?

To tell you the absolute truth, I would do Woody Allen for money, but the money would only be half of it. The rest of it would be the ability to look people in the face and say, “Yeah I did Woody Allen for the money. And for the story. It was awful, but now I’m loaded and get to see the expression on your face. Oh so worth it for so little effort.”

Though on that last part, you just know Woody’s a cuddler.
