I know! Kaufman and Weerasethukal are the future of cinema.
They surely are. PTA and Duncan Jones (Moon) is interesting too.
It’s true that Kubrick is one of the first directors to discover, as his works are widely available and his name is alluded to quite a lot in the media.
However, the excellence of his work overshadows any negative effect that could come from this much publicity. If at the end of the day the work stands alone as a work of art, then you cannot disrespect the artist by looking at his fans.
All of his masterpieces (Barry Lyndon, 2001, Clockwork) require a second look.
there are a lot of high school fan boys who love kubrick
that being said
I am thirty and have had a long history with kubrick films. I have seen all but the documentaries (even fear and desire at a screening in NY) I have read tons of biographies and memiors in which he is mentioned.
In other words, very interested in Kubrick
He began his work life as a photographer with a real interest in the tech side of cameras but a talent for capturing life. His film career proper began with killers and killers kiss too well shot clever films
then Kirk Douglas saw those and let him direct paths of glory, a very moving film. Soon after Kubrick became a producer and with James Harris set about making Lolita
How they made Lolita into a movie in the early 60s was by being incredibly witty and subtly sexual. It is a great comedy. He met Peter Sellers on Lolita and let him improvise (which he almost never let an actor do) he enjoyed sellers so much he wanted to include him in Strangelove, which was very close in black comedy tone to Lolita.
After the masterpiece strangelove, he moved to England and it is believed became a somewhat isolated former new yorker. This may account for the shift in his films as they became for about technology and how things looked then the characters and capturing life (in my opinion).
Billy Wilder (a very wonderful director) said in his book with cameron crowe that Kubrick lost him when he has more interested in making sure the candlelight look worked in barry lyndon than actually entertaining anyone. And he may have a point.
Personally there is not a Kubrick movie that I don’t admire (except maybe EWS) but admire is not always the same as like.
