do you buy dvds or just rent them?

McBean

I was thinking about another thread in which people were saying how many dvds they have in their collection and most people who responded had varying degrees of A LOT. I have a lot too and there’s always new ones to get. But I got to thinking, why am I BUYING them? I mean, thinking about it now I can barely keep up with the back catalogue stuff I haven’t seen yet and the new stuff that’s coming out all the time, never mind re-watching all the dvds I’ve already watched. I’m not going to live long enough to be able to re-watch all my dvds even just once each! Speaking for myself I suppose I’m just a hoarder. What about you? How many times would you realistically expect to watch a dvd that you’ve bought? Or do you just rent the films you want to see?

If it’s a film I haven’t seen, I’ll usually rent it first to see if I want to buy it. Especially for Criterion DVDs, I can’t afford to buy all the Criterions that pique my interest. But the DVDs that I do buy are ones that I want to watch again and again and also films that I want other people to watch. Especially smaller, lesser known films, I’m happy to let friends borrow the DVD so they can check out a film they wouldn’t normally see.

i rent them first, and if it’s a movie that i like so much that I just can’t stop watching, then I buy it. that’s probably why my collection is so small. Then again, sometimes, I’ll randomly buy a dvd that I’ve never seen, that I’ve just heard is good from the reviews, and a lot of the time it kind of fails. Such as with Delicatessen. It seemed like a movie I’d love, but it turned out to be simply so-so to me. I mostly rent. More economical, I suppose

I used to be a hoarder. That was in the days of the laser disc, which I was convinced was the ultimate form to keep, and bought hundreds of Criterions amongst others. Then, I hoarded a few laser disc players after they stopped being made. It took a move to Europe for me to sell it all off (made loads of money on Ebay!). Now I rent, rent from the library and now see films online. Travel light is my motto now.

Have never rented a DVD.

Netflix and me are tight. My shelves still bulge grotesquely, though.

Netflix is like a dream come true: they are completists, they buy indiscriminately—and, best of all, they don’t practice passive censorship buy not buying controversial/explicit films.

i dont rent anymore, i buy, because after watching the film, then i could just slide it back in my film collection room. its mine, not the rental stores

I rarely ever rent anymore. I have a pretty good notion that what I buy will be good (usually), and even though I have not seen plenty of the films that I bought before I bought them, they still tend to be enjoyable.

Now, though, I may start getting Netflix in the near future, and, if so, this post will probably become superfluous, or something. Oh well.

If I really like a movie, I’ll buy it.
Mostly rent or borrow.

I never download movies, but I do for TV shows (either that, or stream)… since they’re harder to come by. Foreign ones especially.

I buy, I rent . . . whatever seems appropriate at the time. If I can rent it, I usually do. If events conspire against that happening, I have zero problem buying a movie without having ever seen it before.

I’ll do anything to get my greasy mitts on a movie.

Mostly I rent my movies from Netflix, but if I have to I will buy a movie to see it.

Why would you buy a new DVD? What will you be replacing it with after Blue-ray?
I bet it wont be a disc….
