Both, they want to make money distributing quality films (and sometimes not so quality).
Sure there’s some marketing hype and the famous “Criterion treatment” sometimes ain’t all that and a bag of chips but overall I’m happy with Criterion.Just think about giving “Sansho the Bailiff” the Facets treatment.
^^agree, it’s both. most companies wouldn’t even bother giving such lavish treatment to a good percentage of the films they release, so for that they deserve respect.
No, but some films on the Criterion label are overrated and certain people overrate a film just because it is on Criterion.
