So dose anyone think Woody Allen is going to act in a film again?

Dennis Brian

he says he probably wont 4 years ago he said he was interested in doing mainstream acting gigs, saying he could do the Walter Matthau roles out there. He died in his last role (Scoop) and he will probably end it that way with his character

I think he will but I hope he won’t.

My favorite Allen films usually don’t feature him (Interiors, Purple Rose of Cairo). I got really tired of seeing him always include a useless/gratuitous shot or two of him making out with the main female character in his film.

At least he never wrote a scene of him making out with Scarlett Johansson! Although truth be told, I’d almost want to see it. The utter creepiness of such a scene would be amazingly transgressive.

The charm of Scoop was seeing Allen and Johansson having FUN together.

Scoop had zero charm for me. Much as I don’t want to see him act again, it would almost be sad for that to be Woody’s last role. I actually like Woody as an actor. While obviously limited I generally don’t mind his presence in his films even when I hate his films. In fact, he was the best part of Anything Else (if only to watch him play against type and he was certainly better than Jason Biggs’ third rate Woody impression). My only regret is that his original choice of Elliott Gould for Deconstructing Harry fell through and he had to play the role himself (he’s fine in the role but Gould would have taken the film to another level)

BTW, Robert, you don’t need to preface your posts with your name. :)

Woody Allen’s best ‘stand in’ was probably John Cusack in Bullets Over Broadway to me. His worst? Kenneth Branagh.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Allen act again, but only in a small role, and i agree he was the beset thing about Anything Else by far.

I honestly feel that “Anything Else” is Allen’s best comedy of the last decade but one very interesting is how his characters personality in that role is a bit different then he is in the other films he appeared in.

Joks, yeah, you’re right. Branagh was a disaster as a Woody surrogate. Even worse than Biggs. He’s probably the worst if you don’t count Will Ferrell in Melinda and Melinda.

I hope he doesn’t act again – not in a major role, at least.

His last great “role”: as himself, in Barbara Kopple’s Wild Man Blues (In which she provides a perfect example of rule of thumb with great documentarians: the subject matter of one’s films is of no importance; there is no need to hew – even absent the influence of financing conditions – to some sort of auteurial consistency of theme. Kopple, Errol Morris and Ross McElwee have made ample proof of this…)
