Dubbed (Synchronized) Films on mubi

I can’t believe that most of the last films come out to stream in my region (Germany) are german dubbed.
What do you think about it? Are you still interested in mubi, if it’s going to be standard???

Why is it not possible to have choose if you want to view the original or a dubbed film like watching TV…. (I think its not really needful, but can understand to have the possibility, to acchieve some more people) I meen, that would be good for all.

But sorry, Reservoir Dogs in German, i can also watch in Mainstream Television…..

And when i look about the thoughts of other mubi-useres im am very suprised about this “new way” of showing “half movies” with just the visual part of art on mubi.

Sorry i am very disappointed, and hope it will stop very soon, what other people think? (Especially in Germany) And how is it handled in Other non-english-spoken-countries from mubi (The “bad other dubbing-Nations” like France, Italy, specially would be interesting)

Hope to have a fertile talk and hope to find better ways than this…… Sorry for my bad english, i don’t like dubber;-)

BTW: when you read the discussions about dubbing you already see that its not really wanted, or am i wrong???

Bummer! That’s pretty annoying! There seems to be a kind of weird dichotomy between the staunch cinephile-leanings of the forum and the way they market their streaming service in Europe. I don’t really get it… especially since they have so few films available for streaming.

I just saw: Reservoir Dogs is even not announced as german dubbed. So maybe there are already more films dubbed than i thought…..

Guys, can we please relax? We care about the integrity of the film as much (or more) than anybody else on this site. The reality of the film distribution business is that we are given the rights to stream a film ONLY with a certain audio in a particular territory from a particular distributor who owns the rights to that film. Sometimes, the choice we are given in places like Germany or Italy is to show a film dubbed, or not show it at all. We prefer to show the film. Most people in these countries actually prefer to watch the film dubbed. If you don’t like it, nobody’s forcing you to pay to watch a film on MUBI. If you live in Germany and want to watch a particular film in original language, you may not be able to find it anywhere (online or offline). That’s the reality.

Just know that we at MUBI love to watch a movie in its original format, and trying as hard as we can to try to show every film with its original language subtitled in local language.

First of all: I love the whole idea of mubi, and i think it’s not a fine way to say: if you are not interested, don’t use it. I even have a flatrate and right now i have a lot of films to watch before i should switch to the dubbed….. anyway, the disgussion about that has just begun……

So, what changed with the “film distribution business” (in Germany or Italy) in the last month so much? Or is it just a coincidence that in this last time period almost every new film is dubbed here? Sorry, but that sounds noncredible for me….
Who are the distributors you talking from?

I guess in which audio-version you get the film for mubi (why not many, also for subtitles? DVDs also have….) mostly depends on mubi and what they’re asking for! And if mubi is really to want to show ORIGINALS (as you say) what should be the problem for distributors? I cannot imagine that ORIGINAL language is more expensive or something. I’ve worked in a cinema in Hamburg. And because it’s digital in the internet instead of a cinema 35mm copy it’s never a problem to get a copy of what you want. (In cinema it is, because there are maybe just a few copies in ORIGINAL and even more copies in dubbed (not always)
But even if it’s more expensive: What are the ideals and standards from mubi?

It’s a question of wat you want…..

And the argument: The people in Germany or Italy just want to see films dubbed so we give the masses what they need, is a little boring…..

That may be true for most of the casual moviegoers in these countries (Germany for example), but I doubt very much that it’s true for the majority of the cinephiles here on MUBI.

If you live in Germany and want to watch a particular film in original language, you may not be able to find it anywhere (online or offline). That’s the reality.

Sorry, Efe, but that’s not the reality. Most DVDs (the German DVD of Tarantino’s “Reservoir Dogs” for example) offer multiple language / subtitle options and leave it to the viewer to decide how (original or dubbed) he wants to watch the movie.

I mean no disrespect. I’m just telling you the facts. You are wrong in your assumption that the audio-version we get depends on MUBI. It does not. Please read my note above again. We prefer to show films in original language with local subtitles and we ask this from all distributors when we sign our deals. And the response, specifically from Universum in Germany, for example, in this case was:

“Please note that we only hold the digital rights for the german dubbed version.”

i.e. not even the local distributor has the rights to show some films in original language.

So, no, it’s not a question of what you want. It’s the realities of the film distribution business.

BTW: You always get any film in original language via DVDs buying or renting offline and downloading streaming sites (more and less legally) online.

Besides, Universum released “Reservoir Dogs” with the English audio on DVD, so it’s strange they now state they only hold the rights for the dubbed version.

But Berlin is i guess 20 times more original language cinema than Hamburg.

Excellent. Except that DVD rights is a completely different thing than online rights. Find me one legal site in Germany that shows IRRÉVERSIBLE or any other film in our German library in original language with local subtitles, and I’ll see why we don’t have it.

By the way, not sure why you are pointing out Tsumetai nettaigyo, Tokyo Sonata, etc. We don’t have the rights to those films so I have no idea what the right situation is. I can only talk about the films we have signed the rights for.

Jeah it’s very strange with the rights for “just one (dubbed) language”…. Because i don’t know any DVDs with just dubbed versions here. It was for sure in the time of VHS-Videos….. But corrct me if i am wrong.

I know it’s strange. Welcome to my complicated world.

The distributors we sign are not just DVD distributors. They are major all rights distributors. But the rights they sign directly from the producers are different for cinema vs. DVD vs. online.

I want to know what kind of messed up logic leads to a distributor having rights to one audio track and not another. Is this some really picky producers being nitpicky with the license or is it some kind of legal intervention?

Anyway, ever consider UK imports?

This whole thing about local countries micromanaging what content you’re allowed to see on the web. While countries with dictators are overthrowing them, governments of democracies are voting themselves more and more power by the day.

Welcome to the 90s. We are now BEHIND where we were in 1998 when some of the very early DVDs had only dubbed languages because of – yeah right issues. I still have like 2 of them. Great to see the same thing now, more than 10 years later, happens with online distribution.

‘Property’ used to mean something physical you held in your hand. Now that so many things that have value are infinitely replicable, big businesses somehow managed to pull off the coup of abstracting the idea of ‘property’ to mean ‘Anything derived from this, we own.’

This is garbage and I do not respect it.

But it’s certainly not Mubi’s fault. ;)

Intellectual property is not exactly a newfangled idea though . . . unless one considers 1867 newlyfangled.

Really annoying to see Mubi going in this direction.

Generally speaking, we like to avoid dubbing whenever possible. As movie
buffs, I can assure you that the vast, vast majority of our films are in
their original versions, and we aim to keep it that way. In the meantime,
all dubbed versions should be clearly marked in the upper right of the
film’s page, with a notice that says “Audio in Deutsch.”

One of our goals is indeed to add more options, so people can choose their
language preference for a film. This is a bit complicated, not just for
technical reasons, but for licensing reasons as well. Believe it or not,
different companies often own the rights to different languages, so just
because we have the right to show a film with German dubbing doesn’t mean
we have the right to show it in its original version.

But rest assured, building a completely versatile (and multilingual)
movie-going experience is our goal for the future. MUBI is an evolving
site. We’ve made many changes in the past year, with many more still to
come. In short, we’re working on it.

i think the problem is not mubi, but germany… Something needs to happen here. i dont want to need to criminalize myself just in order to be able to watch a movie or any other work of art in the way its creator(s) intended it to be watched. It is borderline Gedankenkontrolle to do this to the public.
I thought this shit stopped when the wall came down. apparently it just put on a different cloak.

guys, I can understand that you are upset about having to watch dubbed films (I hate it myself, and I can tell because I’m from Germany) but: please don’t blame it on mubi (or on Germany), the movie business is generally f***ed up when it comes to rights. Just think of the region codes for DVDs and BDs, who could ever make up something like that? I’ve been working with a film festival team for a couple of years and rights holders can really make your life hell!

but i’m pretty confident that the internet and platforms lilke mubi will eventually bring an end to this madness :-)
