I’ve read that a new scene was added in the late 70s to capitalize on the Jaws craze (you’ll know the scene when you see it) but I don’t know about a 114 minute version. My Criterion DVD case says that the film is 87 minutes long, not 83, so that’s kind of strange. Others more expert than I on Tati may be able to shed some light on this.
What I’ve read is that the “PAL” version plays a little faster than the listed 86 min (87 min on Korean version?), ending up at 83 minutes. The origial copy was 114 minutes, but Tati kept tightening it up, much as he loved to tighten up the shots and segments while shooting. A perfectionist, we’d call him. So, the version available to the US and Canadian player market runs an actual 83 minutes. That’s what I have come to learn—-comments?

I’m confused, everything I read on the web says that M. Hulot’s Holiday is 114 minutes long but the Criterion DVD says it’s only 83 minutes long on the back cover ( but plays for 86 minutes.) The main titles say that this is a new version with a 1977 copyright. Does that have anything to do with the difference in length?
