You really can’t go wrong with Naruse. I’m working through that box set and everything is amazing so far.
At the 40% off phase I got Vivre sa Vie, This Is Spinal Tap, and Freaks.
Do they still have a good selection on the website?
Amazing…I’ll have to stop by the New York location this week.
underworld is pretty terrific, jazz.
i wish i lived near a borders :(Do they still have a good selection on the website?
Does the sale apply to the website items?
@Adam
Thanks for the feedback. I’ll consider it.
Website seemed to indicate it was for the stores only…so it becomes a matter of luck finding stuff that’s already been massively picked through.
Thanks, Ruby. I’ll think about picking that up (if it’s still at the store).
@Ben
That’s what I thought. We have two branches on O’ahu. I already picked up the Late Ozu for 40% off. We’ll see about the others.
Sale moved down to 70% off, so I got the Von Sternberg box and the Imamura one. (I might pick up the BBS box if it’s available in the next few days. Last day is Monday.)
Does anybody know if Border’s will ship to Canada, and if so how much extra it would cost me? Much obliged.
Never mind, I just realized that the sales don’t include online, dashing my dreams of supremely cheap Criterions against the rocks.
Oh man, went into a branch in midtown Tuesday night…lots of copies of TWILIGHT on Blu-Ray, but that was about it. Real weird, random stuff that had not been bought yet. Couldn’t find anything amongst the 60 or so remaining discs that I’d ever heard of or thought looked interesting.
Jazzaloha
The DVDs are now 60% off. Here are a few titles that I considered:
Josef von Sternberg—Three Silent Classics. I’ve seen two out of the three and liked them, but I’m not sure I like them enough to warrant a purchase. (Underground is the one I haven’t seen.) Still, I’m intrigued the way the films look with new transfers. (But I could easily rent the films to check this.)
The BBS story. I’ve seen some of the films, but the others would be a purely blind buys.
Pigs, Pimps and Prostitutes: Three Films by Shohei Imamura. Haven’t seen any of these.
Silent Naruse
Sweet Movie
There’s a collection of Humphrey Bogart films (originally $120). If it included In a Lonely Place, I probably would have gotten it.
There’s a couple of Samuel Fuller box sets, too, that I thought about.
Any advice or comments would be appreciated.
