My God, I wish I lived in NY.
New thread revival in favor of a director who needs to be more widely available and not just with his swan song which is the ONLY Criterion released title in his filmography, sigh.
(and the least great of his films)
Edward Yang Ranked: (without having seen That Day on the Beach, all of his films except Yi Yi get 5 from me)
1 The Terrorizer
2 A Brighter Summer Day
3 A Confucian Confusion
4 Mahjong
5 Taipei Story
6 Yi Yi
I accidentally acquired Taipei Story last night thinking it was a HHH film, not knowing that it was a Yang film starring HHH. Can’t wait to see it.
Taipei Story is an excellent film. I saw a print of it shown by the Duke University screen society a few years ago.
I keep waiting for a major announcement from Criterion regarding the A Brighter Summer Day.
The Terrorizer was recently restored and digitally remastered by Taiwan’s Central Pictures Corporation. I have been told that the film was released in a box set along with Hou’s Dust in the Wind and Chen’s Tropical Fish but it doesn’t appear to be readily available at this point.
In case anyone is interested, the box set I mentioned earlier is now available at YesAsia. I wish it was slightly more affordable.
Thanks for this, Arsaib.
I think you can get it on VHS.
I wonder how the subtitles are? I’d like to see The Terrorizer again.
Okay, now I feel silly.
Exactly one week ago, I ordered a region-0 DVD of it with english subtitles on ebay. I totally blanked on this when I made my previous post.
Its now 2012. Is there any website to obtain a decent quality of A Brighter Summer Day?
Just wanted to mention that there’s a Taiwanese edition of The Terrorizers that includes the film on both Blu ray and DVD (both region free), that can be had from YesAsia for $39.99 .
Glenn Kenny has posted a few frames here .
Nice! Been wanting to see it for years.
It’s one of his best films.
The president of Criterion, Peter Becker has made an audio and video statement that he is doing his best to acquire the film from Taiwan and the new restored print.
It took Martin Scorsese to get it the first time and I certainly hope he isn’t needed again.
Thank you Mat Parks and Asarib that’s one hell of a find!!!
yeah great news Ben. Thanks for sharing.
We need more quality dvd’s of Yang’s films, that’s for sure.
yeah i just watched this for the first time recently and the only copy i could find had both foreign and english subtitles on screen at the same time and they would often move around, sometimes off picture, white on white, horrible picture quality. i would love to watch it again sometime with criterion level treatment.
Ben – Where would I go to find this audio and video statement? Dare I ask you to share that?
